I've noticed that in the mainstream christian ring that christians get ticked off at preachers who are doing well for themselves. Like Joyce Myers has caught a lot of slack for buying a large piece of land for her faimly. I mean WTF she's wrote enough books don't ya think
kris, likely because of something like this: "Then Jesus said to his disciples, 'I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.'" Matthew 19:23-24
If you read the surrounding text a man asked jesus how to be perfect, christ says give all your belonging to the poor and follow me. Which leads me to belive that is just refering to greed. As long as you give god his part and do good things with your money where whould the problem lie? I just find it funny that alot of people become wealthy with the books they write and other christians will get mad at them. Whose to say that God didn't give that person the money in the first place????
That's an odd way to interpret "give all your belongings to the poor and follow me." As something other than what it is. That's probably the most straightforward thing there.
I agree, but it's the interpretation of choice in developed nations. Most people in the US spend the same amount on their gym shoes that it would take to keep 10 people in the third world from starving to death for a month. If ministers in the US started telling people they had to live like first century christians (if you believe the book of Acts) everyone here would become an atheist.
how is that a funny interpetion? The man asked Jesus what to do, Christ said give ALL your belonings to the poor. and the man got ticked off. how else can it be greed?
I just read what i posted and it dosen't make much sense HAHA! as far as the verse - I think it has to do with Greed not having money God ask us to tithe 10% and the rest that we give to chose is up to us and becomes offerings. If you give 30% of your money away and can still affoard to buy your whole faimly a house what have you done wrong to deserve 3/4 of xianty to get mad at you when only half of them give thier 10%. All I'm saying is if someone gives their life and time to writing books and preaching, then tithes and offererings, and then buys them seleves something with God's money *If he okay'd it* for their faimly to live in. Why would you be mad at them unless it was anything but jealousy?
could i just ask, where does it say that God asked for '10%', i thought God never actually said tithing is necessary, but this was a a church thing
The Greek and Hebrew words for "tithe" literally mean "tenth" (according to Strong's Dictionary), so the basic meaning of tithing involves giving 10% of something. Therefore, if I choose to give 10% of my paycheck to my church then I have given a "tithe" according to the most basic definition of that word. The New Testament tells us to give generously (as we will see later), and my 10% offering would certainly qualify as generous giving! and the link http://www.layhands.com/MustChristiansTitheTenPercent.htm
yeah but you said God said 10% which he clearly did not, and also tithing is an idea by the church not by God, Jesus didn't speak of 10 percent. i think people get angry, because they use their faith to make money and get rich, and that is the opposite of what Jesus preached, and that is why i cannot accept those people as real christians, they may have the knowledge but they do not practise it
"After Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's Valley). Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, and he blessed Abram, saying, "Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. And blessed be God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand." Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything." Genesis 14:17-20 - NIV "A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain form the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord; it is holy to the Lord." Leviticus 27:30 - NIV "Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine." Proverbs 3:9-10 - NIV "Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." Luke 6:38 - NIV
i do not mean to be rude, but only one fo these quotes contained ten percent and that was a specific moment, i do beleive Christains should give, but i wouldn't give to the church , as i think most churches are the furthest away from what christ spoke of, just my opinion. i give to causes that i believe will make the earth a better place whether they be for Fair Trade, or a environmentally friendlier earth, not to a church who i don't agree believe the same thing. and i would never put a figure on this... i do not think Jesus put a number on the amount of people he helped or how many miracles, if i come across someone in the need of help, i will help them even if it is more than my ten percent. i find it very un-jesus like to give a figure of how much you should give
Sadly in today's world you must have money to live and feed your children and provide for your faimly. If you want to stand in front of God and say "They can't come because they weren't poor!!!!!" Would you trip out if God said "I gave them that money?" But yeah i agree with you, I don't like it when people use their faith as personal gain and not God's gain. however I don't see money as wrong. Sadly i think alot of people look over a big part in that verse. "the *LOVE* of money" lol nothing in it self is inhearintly evil.
what is 'poor', i believe many who are poor have most of the money, they are usually quite unhappy, i know i am happier when i have no money and have to come up with creative ideas of what to do. as long as i can eat and are smiling then i am SO rich. so what about those who do not give ten percent because they cannot afford it? i just do not like church rules, the only rule should be that you should love God, which is why i do not go to Church untill i can find a 'open minded' church which is happy to have me there. i do not see money as been love, money is the evil in the world as present, money casues the problems as the world is run on money but unfortuantely at present it is a must to survive. i love God, and he will lead me, i do not need money to lead my life. as most people in the West, and a lot of hypocritical 'christians' who support the selfish system we live in in modern life
I give money to the church I attended because the church needs to be able to pay rent and all other such bills. I give sperate money to the pastor sometimes because he needs it *He does Dish installs for the Internet company i do tech support calls for and rust me they don't pay much* Yesterday I bought a foolsball table for the youth *it was only 21 bucks* but lol i make under 200 a week. Do I belive that you should give money to all churchs? no because i think some of them are in it for personal gain. By me giving money to my church i help garanutee that everyone else will enjoy it next month because the churches lights were paid for. I was making 10$*then getting a dollar raise within a month before i moved* an hour running a sliter with 100% job security *why? because it takes over 3 months before you are competly able to run the shop by your self* being 18 that is a sweet gig. I moved from TN back to TX to youth pastor at the church and work techsupport * one of the highest burn out jobs* making 6hr...with no job secruity.... And take no money from the church for youth pastor'n. So I understand how hard it is for pastor to keep a church running, prepare a message ever wed and sun, and work full time at the same time. which is the main reason i give money to the church and or pastor.
Like I said earlier *or i think i said it* its not just money it can be anything even your time. I don't see anything wrong with moeny if you don't put it before God. I need money for all my piercings lol!!! As far as an open minded churches. I have blue hair, an industrial, 10ga lobes, an orbital, and 2 lip piercings and they let me youth pastor. lol so I feel like its okay for me to tithe my time and money to that church because I knowthey help the community
you see that is the real idea of giving, you are giving yourself, that is a much better idea. The only thing i disagreed with you was the exact 10 percent. time is worth more than money is anybodies books. i just at present see more pressing needs for my money and time then a church, there are people dying everywhere who need my money more than a building
good to here, i havn't found a church like that in my new town i have just moved to for university, it is quite a small country town compared with the huge city i lived in before. and i havn't come across a christian in this town who i can correlate my views with. if you know your money will do good then good for you. so for now, i can worship God on the beach, in a field, under a tree or in my room peacex
