I know this is pretty small potatoes to most of you, but it's a giant step for me. Yesterday I passed the 7-week mark on an ovo-vegetarian diet. I'd lost count of how many times I've gotten to week 5 or 6, and ran to Burger King to get a "fix." I'm guessing it was the iron, but even knowing that didn't do much good. This time I was committed to not giving in, and I did it! I've passed my "point of no return" and am doing just fine. Even my mom's famous roast beast with mashed potatoes & deep, dark gravy just doesn't hold any temptation. Now I'm thinking about those eggs. I'm already dairy-free, so it's just the eggs I've got to consider. But I get my eggs from a local farmer (I know him personally) and I know they're organic, drugless free-range birdies. So I guess I'm just not seeing the reason to drop them quite yet. Anyone got any good reasons? I dunno about being a complete vegan either. Honey is my favorite "food group," and while I know all the reasons to drop gelatin, it's one of the few things I can do to help with my collagen deficiency. I suppose I'll be dropping that soon though; the sugar in Jello is too much for my system & I can't afford the super-concentrated gunk for arthritis anyway. But honey... oooh, that would be a tough one to drop. What's the scoop on honey anyway? I'm thinking I ought to take this one step at a time, but I'm trying to think one step ahead. love, mom
congrats to you! some vegans do consume honey and some do not......i personally dont and as far as eggs go....even though they may come from free range birds i still feel that we as humans have no right to use those birds and then steal their precious young from them. chickens love their young and they love their eggs....i feel its wrong to take them. besides, who wants to eat an aborted baby? not me anyway, you mentioned going to burger king for a "fix".....have you tried their veggie burger? its good and they dont cook it on the same grills where they cook the meat (i asked...they actually nuke them...but they are still good)
*urk!* Umm, yeah I hadn't quite looked at it that way. I'd understood that the eggs were "candled" and that the fertilized ones were left for the next hatching, and the unfertilized ones were what were eaten. No thanks, no aborted babies for me either. That's one of the reasons my kids are only partially vaxxed! And yes, I've had the veggie burger once. It was okay, but I think Boca makes a better one love, mom
yeah when you grow up eating eggs (most everyone's parents fed them eggs as a kid) they are just....eggs. but then when you think about what they REALLY are...which is an aborted chick ......pretty gross, eh? did you know that birds communicate with their chicks before they hatch? they talk to each other while the baby is still in the egg! ....thats cute i think. anyway, glad to have another vegan in the world!
Well congratualtions......Yeah if you ever have a craving for a burger...just go get a boca or if you are on teh road then get a veggie from BK.....Personally - I have basically given up eating the fake meat too. Here is a suggestion from me just for you, do with it as you wish.... Get all your protein from tofu...learn how to cook it how you like it (feel free to PM me and I can give you some tips). Get your protein from the beans and the tofu.....Then use the "fake meat" as something you eat ONLY when you have a meat craving........Thats just an idea.....I have only had one meat craving since I went Veg more than 5 months ago, and that was after watchign a commercial, but now I dont have to worry about it, because I sold my TV ....by the way...I was just thinking about that time you said you had a hip problem and thought....why dpont you try getting into a yoga class.....yoga reallty helps to heal your body and for me it has really helped me start to rid myself of these old highschool football/car accident injuries that physical therapy never helped......anyways, congratulations and good luck. peace.
actually, if the eggs are unfertilized, as most are, its more like dining on one's monthly menses, so to speak. note a similar sliminess in egg white and menstrual blood: they serve the same purpose: nurture potential life. Did I help, Marcy? (evil wink) also iron is found in good amounts in lentils. have your sweetie take you out for Indian in the name of your health!
oh, and honey: I bought a half gallon back in 2001. When that's gone , honey will be gone except for ritual use at Rosh Hashanna. I love aguave nectar, marketed by Madhava (that's also the honey I have). It's available raw for the raw foodies, too!
Okay, I don't think I'm going to eat eggs anymore. That's just NASTY! And yeah, that's exactly what it is, huh? Ohhh, YUK!!! No more eggs, thanks! That's alright, bananas in the pancakes worked wonders anyway so there wasn't much making me want to eat them anyway. I just tried tofu for the 1st time in about 20 years. We went out to lunch with MIL, and I had Vegetarian Schezuan stirfry with tofu in it. Tastes like eggs! I think I can stomach it now. love, mom
yeah also there is so many different ways to cook tofu......It is fun to expirament...my favorite is curry tofu...especially the way the jamaican guy does it at one of our local restaraunts.....he gives me cooking tips....dont forget there is different frimness's (?) of tofu.....extra firm is real good for stiryfry.
Curry tofu? I think I could try that. I've only just begun experimenting with curries. My stomach isn't sure what to do with it quite yet. If I use about 3/4 of the recommended spices for any given recipe I seem to do alright. Yeah I've used the slimy smooshy tofu in smoothies before, but this is the first time I've really given eating it a chance. I was thinking it might make a great southwestern omelette... or something like that. It was strange, because the last time I tried it I was a lil girl, and I'd thought it was the nastiest food (except for liver) on the planet! Now here I am coming up with excuses to add it to my diet. love, mom
just remember it takes on the taste of whatever you cook it with....its also great with rice and beans
its also overkill in rice and beans! too much protien! look on post punk kitchen for baked tofu. It's a pretty good recipie.
