My son had a science experiment where he was supposed to take 2 identical cactus & see what happened when he watered one constantly. Well he rightly deduced that it would die, and refused to do the experiment because he did not want to be responsible for consciously killing something. So I allowed him to alter the assignment.

He is now the proud owner of 3 different cacti, and has planted them in a shallow dish & decorated with polished stones & small dinosaur figures. We've spent the morning trying to find pictures of different types of cactus online, and can't seem to figure out what these are. Does anyone know of a good book or website that shows types of cactus?

Oh... we know that the red & yellow flowers are strawflowers that have been glued on. But the orange one seems to be a living part of that plant.
    Thanks so much!
    love,

He also knows what they are not.

    they are not an agave
they are not a prickly pear
    they are not an aloe
    they are not a yucca
    they are not chollas
and they are not barrel cacti

But we can't seem to find good pictures of
    euphorbia
    trichocereus or
    mammilaria
and they look like they could be any of these from what he's found so far.
    love,
    mom

    Hey there Momma!
first and foremost: good job on raising such a smart kid! [IMG]
I can't tell very well from the picture, but from my very LIMITED knowledge it loos like a graft---they basically grow a cactus on top of another so that they have a "standard" (tree-like) appearance
i would reccommend getting the Complete Book of Cacti & Succulents, by Terry Hewitt, it has a very informative plant catalog, it includes a care and cultivation catalog and has tons of colorful pictures
    i hope that helps!
    peace
