Marijuana and intelligence levels

I know some of you may be chuckling because of the title. But seriously, I have wondered something. First of all, the stereotypical stoner is portrayed as a totally fried, blah, C-H-I-L-L person. You get the idea. Often times this goes into the stupid territory. Personally, I think this is a load of bullshit. Yes, you do get fried and feel like your brain is cotton wool if you smoke a bit too much. overall,however, i think smoking pot opens up doors in the brain that would have never even have been located in some people had they not got high and thought about things.
so my Q is, what do you think? Does smoking up making you stupid or smart? does it vary from person to person? or does it simply just enhance what you are already?
(one thing's for sure, it makes stupid things like this more fun)
oh yeah and is it just me or does being high make fake people and things and just everything really obvious. i see right thru so many ppl's nonsense and all.

Most of the "fried" smokers are the ones that did nothing before they started smoking pot. They were stupid before it, so they're definitely not going to be smarter afterward.

I don't think it really has any effect on whether you're smart or dumb. In special circumstances some things like not being able to remember where you put things 'cause your memory is gone or nothing being able to remember some piece of knowledge could be considered a damper on intelligence, but I don't really think so. You still have the same intellect you had before you smoked pot.


What's interesting is that when I'm high, I often times like to exercise that intellect more. I've written so many philosophical papers while I was high that I woudln't know what to do with them all if I weren't high most of the time (my friend and I decided we'd tape them to the sides of buses so normal people can just read them at random). All this has given me the chance to explor on how some things work in research for writing, and has just led to me exercising my brain a lot more.


I don't think pot makes you stupid at all. Unless you happen to be one of those people that like to hold their breath for an incredibly long time. Then you're killing brain cells.

all my stoner friends always had really high grades in school. though, it was like that before they were on drugs, too. but once my psych teacher pulled my friend out of class (who was letting her grade drop) and told her it was a sure sign she was on drugs (she's very against drugs) while my other friends had the highest grade in his class and they came to class stoned almost everyday and spoke about doing drugs openly in front of the teacher. this always makes me laugh.

 

Well, when you hold your breath for that long, and especially when there's very minimal amounts of oxygen in your lungs (beacuse the other bit is smoke and THC), then you're causing damage to cells in your brain not getting enough oxygen. That's what killed the monkeys in the infamous test done on them to see if THC killed brain cells. They pumped 63 joints into them within a 5 minute period of time. The monkeys had severely damaged brains mainly due to asphyxiation.

Yeah, the people conducting the experimentns decided to save time, though. Just so they could save on wages of others working on the project.

 

i don't think i could smoke that many joints in five minutes. and since i am not taking that much at one time, its not effecting me the same way. i mean if you took a bottle of asprin in five minutes, it would be a LOT different than if you had a pill every now and again and eventually (over a long time period) had used up the whole bottle. maybe scientists should try doing realistic experiments.

 

damn lol, this is one of the best threads ive seen in a while, Im not quite sure if it has made me more stupid, I do find myself forgetting alot of things i used to know and have a really short term memory now, but on the other hand, When i blaze i can think mad deeply about shit and come up with some pretty interesting shit, so mabey it has takin some knowledge away but ive gained some more too, so its all good

 

Alot of Stoners at my school are in honors classes, but their's also alot repeating classes too, so I really don't think pot effects your intelligence, mabey more so your motivation. As for my self, my grades have dropped in math, but that's becuase I don't spend alot of time on it compared to my other subjects, especially literature, I want to be a writer. I've been kicked out Religion class dozens of times for, yes it's true, (heresy and anti-christan/ sadistic(in their minds) words and "preachings.") Their seriously thinking about pulling me out of bible class this year becuase they think i'll be to much of a nuisence, which of corse I will be. I know for a fact this is due to pot becuase once I got high and went to borders and came across the satanic bible and began reading it. It opened my mind to other veiw points and religions even though I'm not a satanist. From then on I started reading a ton of philosophical and relgious books ranging from the holy bible to principia discordia(best book ever.)

I think i've pretty much found the same results as everybody else. Some of my pothead friends have the best grades and r at the top of the class and some of them are failing school. To me its all about the person you were be4 u smoked pot. If u were lazy be4 u'll be even more lazy during. If u were ambitious..u prob. still get ur sh*t done and get stoned. To me its all about balance. Knowing ur limits with pot or with any drug. U've got to keep yourself in check. Know urself..if ur getting too lazy lighten up on the pot a lil.

The only time i've noticed a significant intellegence drop in anyone from pot is when my friends sis smoked 24/7 for a long peiod of time (were talking ova a yr.) She doesn't smoke anymore, but she def. is NOT altogether like she use to be!

 

Yea pot hasn't really been detrimental to my academic performance thus far. If anything, my grades in English class improved since I started smoking, not saying there's any relationship there, and my class rank went up. I still got my work done and could get stoned when I had time to chill, graduated 5th in my class. So, yea, I agree with Dustystar. It's the person that matters more than the drug.

for me, ive definately noticed an effect on my intelect. i used to be so sharp and quick witted, but i notice little things. its more difficult to find my words and express myself, when im not high aswell. i feel duller. i feel like i've dropped some of my vocabulary. its a marginal difference, but it is noticable.

I have to agree with PITPAT. I would have to say there is definitely some difference while smoking regularly. Short term memory is definitely affected while smoking. But stop smoking for a day or two and you recover. The true stoner pothead loser is teh person who smokes constantly and just doesn't care enough about him/herself to regulate thier actions. When pot becomes your God (no reference to another thread) then it has gone to far and you need to slow down. Otherwise, smoke up and enjoy.
