The new generation being i guess generation Y, or the echo boomers or millenials whatever u wanna call it, born sometime between like 1978-1995. I see alot of talk on these boards about us, and most seems to be very negative. i'm afraid right now the people that grew up in the 60's are thinking the same thing about the kids now a days that their elders thought of them back in the day. I was born in 1982 i live in it and i'm with people my age every day and i can really tell ya there not bad at all. No their not at all like hippies, but it's not a bad thing. And i think we will change the world one day because it seems inevitable. Were over twice the size that generation X was, just about the sime size as the baby boomers. And were moving through college with outstanding grades and are now entering into the workforce. Once this whole generation is in the workforce theres no way it can be the same as it is now, were not like older people, it'll change. and i'm sure it'll be for the better. We've grown up with every single race imaginable so were all use to diversity, were totally comfortable with modern technology and can probly use it better then our parents and bosses, were so used to every single culture that we all get along pretty great with every1 including older people, were smart, and despite what people might think alot of people do wanna work for something that makes a differnce in the world. I'ts not gonna be a revolution but things will change.

I pretty much agree with you on this one, Theres so much diversity in the world today, that it will be hard to fill the positions that lay open to be filled to make the current system run the way it is. The information out there is heightening, and even unimaginable things are possible with the boom of our collective consiousness.
We'll all naturally fall into the positions of the new earth. In my opinion.

An interesting fact: the ratio of adult to teens is now about the same as it was in the 1950's. If you look back at that time you see a lot of teen-phobia. See the movie "Rebel Without a Cause" and "The Wild One." Parents were talking about ways to control and track teens, just like now. I think that attitude had more to shape the hippy movement than we give credit to. The hippy movement was a reaction to the oppressions of the 1950s, but that didn't come to the mainstream until the numbers were there.

You kids have an opportunity to sow the seeds of the next generation. You are our Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg. Do tell me about it.

Being (I guess) a member of said generation, I think the most responsible thing for us to do would be to call an end to all this "generation" bull-crap. As you said, because of the social shifts in the world during our lifetime, we tend to be much more used to and open to diversity than most people. Having said that, isn't it kind of a step backward to be drawing all these lines between ourselves and eachother? Personally, most of my best friends these days are usually between 35 and 50. But if we try to knock down these stupid barriers and all just recognize our own humanity, it seems like there's a lot to gain...

there really is no barrier it's not like because i say the millenials were born between 1978 and 1995 that theres a wall around these people and they cant venture out and meet people older and younger, it's just a name of kids that were born within a time period. I think older people are drawing the lines just as much as younger people are. For the most part, 50 year olds dont wanna hang out with 20 year olds and because of being brought up in a differnt time, dissagree with their ways of life and how they act. thats just the way it is. But our generation already does get along quite well with the older people, certainly much more then generation X did.

I guess our generation isn't unified. All we seem to do is kick the crap out of each other (Scallies kick in emos, skaters kick in scallies, everyone kicks in goths etc.). I kinda disagree about our generation getting along with the older folks, but maybe that's just around here.

Its probly differnt for everybody living in a differnt place, cause i live in new jersey and theres emo kids all over and some goths and preppy kids jocks whatever every type and nobody kicks the crap out of anybody, (i gues i cant say nobody cause obviously there are fights sometimes but not very often just for being differnt) i mean they all dont normally hang out together but when they do they get along just fine every1 is used to seeing lots of differnt types of people cause thats how the world is now. At least here in jersey ha i hope elsewhere to. I've pretty much been differnt then most people my whole life, and never once got into a fight, and usually everywhere i go whatever type of person it is i meet we usually get along.

If people would look at things alittle differently, it might change things. Young people, long haired, skaters etc. are always going to be looked at as "trouble" by older people. Just because people dress different than the norm, or listen to a certain type of music, it is not right to label or judge.

man my school is small and everybody is hippies and such its pretty sweet, but id have to say we are kinda a crappy generation because i see no focus on changing things just fitting in with the man not rebelling.

I'm partial... LOL.. I have two wonderful children that were born in 1978 and 1980... Yeah... They had their usual problems... WHEW!! but they ended up fine... Take it from a old hippie girl, if you can get thru your high school years you've got it made... I'm just glad that I don't have to raise my kids today, the pressures are so much greater and the temptations are just unbelieveable.. They WILL make it thru it though, and someday they will be the strength and fiber of our country... Hang in their guys...
