This might be in the wrong section of the forum, if so can a Mod or somebody please move it, thankyou! heres the problem: Most of Africa and Less econimicly developped countries. More developed countries go across and exploit cheap labour big rich companies get bigger and richer Working people gain a few skills but dont increase on the ladder of money Famine, drout, earthquakes, desertation decrease chances for people to prospour High birth rate high death rate Greedy/Corrupt governments which dont help the poor, increasing their money but pushing the poor down Mass slums Not enough Charities there to help There are other problems, but you get the idea. this is just one of the main problems i think we have with sosciety. I feel guilty almost that i live in a comfortable world, with food, education, nice clothes, family, friends Etc. which i take for granted and then there are these people stuck in the "third world" who are unable to help them selves because people who are in the Easy, Television world can exploit them to make their lives that little bit more comfortable. Something drastic needs to be done - Live aid/8 was a start, there are millions of charrities going (and i think everyone should donate to atleast one, it's only like 2 pounds a month - as soon as i get a job i will start helping) But i think there should be an organisation to go over there to either over throw their governments, and help the people. the world needs to be an even playing ground and i find it hard accepting what i have when i am unaware of what others have to suffer. HERE IS MY PLEE - as a 17 year old English lad, WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP!?
Sorry for making the thread a little bit overly long - but i think it is worth spending two minutes just to read it and contemplate.
you have made the first step: noticing the probem. Now, it looks like eating an elephant. How does one eat an elephant? bite by bite. What one areas would you like to assist? What can you do? can you join the Peace Corps or similar? Can you work with a charity in the UK that helps? either as a volunteer or an employee? Can you raise money for anything? can you contribute money to one particular project? a man I used to work with ran a foundation in eastern Colorado. It focused on...well, he couldn't focus! BUT he said an organization needed three things of people: Time, money and influence. infuence could be as simple as working an issue table at fair/concert/ school event. It could be writing letters to the editor of the local paper. It could be going into a carer to further your goals.
I've been shopping and volunteering at a fairtrade store in Albuquerque, NM since 1993. www.peacecraft.org Peacecraft is a beautiful store, with many beutiful people helping to do a beautiful thing. I even just hangout there a lot, even when i'm not helping. Fair trade is far more popular in the UK, and they probably have many volunteer opportunities. Giving money is cool, but Fair trade is also about human dignity, and co-ops, and equality. http://www.bbc.co.uk/norfolk/your/access/multiethnic/volunteering.shtml
