So, today I had a WIC appointment and they weighed me. I haven't been weighed there since I went in for my first appointment in September. I get on the scale expecting to see within the range I saw last week in weighing myself at Brian's parent's house. No, instead, I see 16 pounds higher than that. I've weighed myself a few times since that last weighing at WIC. I've been consistent in my weight, gaining a pound and a half, or so I thought. And my clothing, besides being tight in the belly, is loose everywhere else. Even the airplane belts fit differently, and they are usually snug. So I'm thinking that the WIC scales are off, really off.. Did anyone else have the same happen to them at WIC? were the scales off for you, as well? Am I nuts?
most scales are calibrated differently. Your scale is different from mine, different from the one at teh rec center, etc. don't sweat it, as long as the RANGE of gain is the same scale to scale. Might want to make sure yours is calibrated to zero. I had one calibrated to 10 for a while!
I checked my weight again this afternoon when i visited my dietician. Same as WIC. So, I've gained an appropriate amount of weight for the length of pregnancy. I was freaking out before because I thought I'd lost a bunch. Anyway, supposedly, I've gained so much because I don't eat enough or consistently(bad momma!) so my body's pulling a starvation trick, conserving everything I eat because it doesn't know when I'll feed it again. Which also explains why I'm so tired all the time.
Yeah, that happened to me while I was on WIC too... I'd go to the doctor & be one weight, then stop over at WIC & lose 12lbs on the drive over. It was pretty weird, until someone explained it to me. If you're on WIC, might I recommend that you get REALLY creative with uses for milk? I swear they must be funded by the American Dairy Association, as I've never had to consume as much dairy as while I was on their program. One thing I made that went over really well was rice pudding. It used up a TON of milk, and you could eat it just about every day without really ever getting tired of it. love, mom
I might try that with the rice pudding....because I swear, I've never ever let milk go to waste before...and now, it's gallons....just gallons....
I second the milk thing.. 4 1/2 gallons a monthy is a lot of milk.. plus 3 pounds of cheese.. thats a lot of dairy!
Really? We always had to buy more milk after our coupons were out! I probably go through 2 gallons a week! And I looooooove cheese!!!
We were so freaking broke and hungry when I was pregnant and my (now ex) husband would drink the whole milk ration in one day!!!! I couldn't believe it. I used to tell him it's WIC for WOMEN Infants and Children, not DIC for Dads Infants and Children. Don't worry about the scales. People are right about them being calibrated differently. I was in the hospital last week and going from one floor to another, after having stuff removed from my body, I mysteriously gained 10 pounds. When I wondered outloud how that could be they said that the scale upstairs says that everyone is several pounds heavier than the scale downstairs does.
when i was getting weighed at WIC they always said i was gaining to much, but my doctor said i was gaining just enough, i gained 39lbs through out my pregnancy which is not that much my doc would tell me about ladies coming in gaining 70lbs, WIC doesn't look at the person they're weighing when they say that they gained to much weight, they just look at the stupid little chart
I gained 65 for my first....their little charts probably don't account for height and build (I am tall), or what you weighed in the first place, either. I was probably considered under-weight before getting preg, skin-and-bones....so the 65 was fitting for me. Charts are so stupid.
Funny you should bring this up, because i went to my first WIC appointment yesterday (why i didn't go before, i don't know, stupid pride i guess). Their scale seemed "right" to me, but holy crap, the MILK. Insane. We use about a gallon a week organic, and a half-gallon of soy, but of course those are no-nos in the program. Suspicious, no? Especially when generic soy isn't much more than regular cow's? Grrr Anyway, i'm hoping to find someone who can use what we don't, but i suppose anyone needy enough to apply for WIC probably has more than they need too...Oh, and i still have jars of peanut butter in the cabinet from when i quit going over a year ago. Why do they only give carrots to lactating women? Isn't it kids that usually don;t get enough veggies? I just hate the whole thing, it's dumb, but helpful just enough that i'm glad to have it *sigh* That was off-topic, sorry!
You can convert the gallons of milk to cheese...I took off a gallon of milk and exchanged it for a pound of cheese. And that's weird that they don't allow organic milk. Washington State WIC allows it. Though, getting two gallons of organic at a time and drinking it slowly is asking for trouble...Threw out so much because it spoilt.
you said.... "Anyway, supposedly, I've gained so much because I don't eat enough or consistently(bad momma!) so my body's pulling a starvation trick, conserving everything I eat because it doesn't know when I'll feed it again. Which also explains why I'm so tired all the time." I'm hoping your prenatal caregiver will check you for ketosis? Best wishes for you and your little one! I had WIC when pregnant and when kiddos were little, and it was a total blessing!
Watch out for that Milk not labeled~ Bovine Growth Hormone Free~ try the the goat milk. Do the research on the BGH, it may change your mind. I totally think that it's funded by the Dairy Association.
So, as a vegan, I can't participate in the program? They won't allow me to get soymilk instead of milk? I should make a stink and try and get the rules changed.
No, you can't get soy. At least not in MN... that's why I ended up having to cancel. I'm lactose sensitive & all that milk was making me just sicker than anything. If you decide to do something about this, lemme know. I'll gladly sign something or write a letter or whatever. Someone ought to do something about it, but I just don't have the time. love, mom
I'd sign something too. Although I'm a milk-drinker by nature, I've read so much that discourages milk drinking in pregnancy....They need to reevaluate these things.
