I was once told that the color of a flower has a specific meaning. For example, orange flowers are supposed to represent hate. I don't remember where I heard that. Does anyone know about this?

There are tons of flower meanings. This is actually a concept that was very popular in Medieval Europe, then revived during the Victorian era. Once you know what a flower's color or name is, you can send "secret messages" to someone in a bouquet :)

If you hunt around online, you will find tons of different flower meanings, but they usually go something like this:
    Red - Love or beauty
Red & White together - Unity
    White - Purity or innocence
    Pink - Friendship or appreciation
Yellow - Joy or a new beginning (also used to signify avarice)
    Orange - Desire
    Purple - Passion
and rosebuds traditionally signify youth, or young love

Here is a site that deals specifically with different roses:

And for flower meanings, you can check here:

And one very old practice that I like to use when arranging flowers in our garden or for my husband is the Posey. You find a flower for each letter in a word, and put them together. When we renewed our vows last winter, I had a bouquet of flowers to spell out our last name on one serving table, and a dozen red & white roses together on the other... everyone loved it & it gave special meaning even to the flowers :)
    love,
    mom
