also is it a permanent home or a place for people to stay for a week? and do u have to play to live there?

It really depends on the individual community, but they are far from nobody working. Usually the group that lives their/owns the land have similiar goals (Ie, a complete off the grid, vegetarian, etc, etc) and they all work together to accomplish then as best possible. They are alot of work, but most members say that they are worth it.

Honestly, the old school communes of the 60s and 70s have all but faded away because the were seen as places to just hang out and without honest input and people lazing around getting high, nothing was accomplished.

yea, the communes that nobody works in and everyone sits around in getting high, usually break up after not so long. I mean when people go out looking to build a utopian society, and a bunch of no good bums come around, getting high and making a mess for everyone, pretty soon everyone gets mad. The option then is to kick them out or leave yourself.
A commune is just like the founding of any other community, as usually (at least in the old days, and probably still would happen out of necessity) people work together and share until everyone is off the ground. Acommune is just a bunch of people wanting to build a community based on values that they feel are not represented enough in their own communities.
And a commune doesnt have to be living out in the middle of nowhere. When you get four like minded people, that come together and rent a house cuz they can't afford a house on their own... in essence thats a commune too.
    peace and love

well it depends on the situation, with regards to the outside working. Sometimes people DO work outside the commune to bolster funds if needed. A commune is just a community like any other, often based on different beliefs. So if extra money is needed people will work outside, but it is usually every communes aim to eventually be self sufficent, or at least to have enough surplus produce to be able to trade it for other necessities.
So people will usually try to make crafts on the commune and sell them, or use some other skill that they have, like massage or psychic readings. That would all be ontop maybe of agriculture produce etc.
Each commune really does have to find its own way.

depending on what you want to build a commune for and equally important who stays at that commune can decide whether or not it will survive ..........if for one you are building a commune to get out of mainstream society ,fine ,but if you have children at that commune ,social services just might butt in ,especially if you condone drug use ..if you grow it and are very low key about it and don't have children there then the cops just might turn a blind eye ..........and unless you have access to unlimited funds ,a commune as a copout to working for a living and doing nothing but getting high is doomed from the start.............most communes here in the 60s died out for one or more of these reasons
