i like emo and indie music. if you actually listen and read some of their lyrics, its all not about killing yourself and cutting yourself.

I totally agree, but i tell my sister this all the time and she thinks im crazy, emo all sounds the same...but then again so does the blues, and old school punk so if thats your taste..cool.

Taking Back Sunday is not emo, they're shitty mainstream music. Rap has shitty mainstream artists, take Mike Jones for example, but there is good rap. Metal has shitty mainstream music, Slipknot. There are shitty mainstream bands that everyone thinks are emo too. So yes, you are very wrong, now please go listen to some Rites Of Spring and Sunny Day Real Estate. Then if you don't like that, come back and say that emo sucks, but if all you've heard is Taking Back Sunday, then you're opinion on emo is worth about as much as the shit I just got done taking before I got online and made this post.

I have to disagree with you there. They may be mainstream but they're not shitty. Listen to Bobaflex if you have to.. it's so painful it's actually hard to listen to a song of theirs all the way through.

 

I hate just about anything being played on the pop stations (that includes top 40 country, top 40 rap, top 40 hip-hop, cookie monster metal, etc.).

 

Slipknot really isn't all that great.

Any band that has a lead singer that sounds like he's still going through puberty, talks about how much his life sucks, or how much he loves his girlfriend, but hates his father; sucks. PERIOD. And my sister listens to tons of emo, Taking Back Sunday was just the only band name I could of thought at the moment. yeh.. a lot of em do sound like whiney teenagers... it annoys me cos it is just another reason for people to stereotype emo, there's a lot of good stuff out there: lydia, alexisonfire etc.. a mate of mine listens to emo and although I never really liked it, some of it is really good.

 

Yeah, I woudn't be adverse to emo either, especially seeing as the music is really good. But i'm yet to hear an emo singer that doesn't sound whiney or lame..and pretty much the same as every other. Its all so uniform, wheres the fun in that?

 

Listen to Drive Like Jehu. They were emo in their day, and there's no whining there. Also check out Slint.
