We have all been to dodgy sites at some time or another haven't we (not child porn ones).

Take ogrish.com. Has anyone been to that site? On that site you can see the most distasteful things ever but pure curiosity can drive you to look at such things.

Child porn however I feel is different and I would take the above article on a case by case basis. If the government wanted all the searches for child porn then I think they should be handed over.

Maybe though it would be better if it wasn't just one government because people are wary of being spied on.

Maybe there should be an international task force set up to deal with the issue of internet child pornography. An independant panel that can trace and gather evidence of individuals accessing certain sites. This evidence can then be passed on to the police force where the individual resides.

There are a few problems however......

How many times have you downloaded something from something like Kazaa or WinMX only to find its not what you thought it was?

How many times have you searched for words in a search engine and the first few results have been nothing to do with what you searched for. (doesn't really happen with google).

I think there has to be a limit. If someone searched for child porn or kiddie sex whatever then throw the book at them but if someone seached for something such as childrens games and accidentally clicked on a site that was child porn then they are obviously not guilty of anything but being duped into going to a site they didn't intend to go to.

The government (can't remember if it was US or UK) once set up a website that advertised itself as child porn to try and trap paedophiles into going there. All the paedos went for Entrapment but how can it be entrapment if the website says "this site contains child porn, click this link if you want to see it". There is a simple answer, don't click the link.

I'm all for google retaining our privacy but some people's internet habits are just plain wrong. Incidentally the government should maybe do more to shut down child porn sites when they are found by fining or shutting down web hosts that harbour them.

I guess the news about Google and it's self censorship within China.. puts a whole new spin on Google..I won't be cynical and say they are being hypocritical to there 'core' beliefs.. but mmmm bugger it i will... i think they are.

Apparently you can scratch ‘censorship in pursuit of profit’ off your list of Things That Are Evil” wrote a blogger on PublicData, who went on to liken the move “to watching little Anakin grow into Darth Vader”.

They have tried there best to justify the action..

Aware of the trade-offs it is making, Google executives said they believed the company could play a more positive role by participating in the Chinese market, despite restrictions, than by boycotting the country in order to avoid such compromises.

I think i have read it is more to do with how easy it is to find child porn with simple inputs into search engines.. How easy or difficult it is.. Ultimately attempting to re justify the Child Online Protection Act .
With Google having a 46% share.. i think them not comeing to a compromise is a little short sighted.

You would be suprised how many people are on the sex offenders list for having visited 'normal' porn sites that had links to child porn ...

It is a difficult thing ... recently it has been quite a issue in the UK

    The 'hysteria'

    'reality'

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4619786.stm

should that person be deemd a 'sex offender' or worse ?.
