I feel extreme sorrow for all progressives in Canada.

I just hope your brand of fascism isn't as bad as ours.

I agree with you on that in many ways.. not just because i want a Tory Majority (but not a landslide either).
Im not looking forward to a big 'he said, she said' fightclub that gets nothing done either.
Thats up to us, the public to make that clear to our respective MPs though.
We want things done - not using it for a 2 year long campaign smearing opportunity.
    By ANY Party.

Don't be sorrowful Libertine. Canadians are fundamentally fiscally conservative but socially liberal.

They got the socially liberal people in, who stole billions from the treasury. Embezzled it. This isn't rumor, or innuendo, it's fact. They did it with Shawinigate, Adscam, the HDRC fiasco, and now there's evidence of insider trading.

In essence Canada wants a progressive fiscal conservative.

I HIGHLY doubt this is the beginning of Canada turning into US North. They are firmly committed to health care and equal opportunity and in the last election they ran more minority candidates than the "progressive" Liberals.

I think that the liberal party in Canada is suffering because of corruption among politicians, giving the conservative party the edge....hopefully we will see that mirrored here in the US. Of course right now in america it isn't the liberal party that's sweating...

Well yeah. When you start embezzling BILLIONS and the cops are finding a new scam daily, even the Europeans would turf em out.

Whats the deal with the NDP? Are they similar to a 3rd party in the states?

Seems they have a much bigger standing then most 3rd parties in America, they seem more like the Liberal Democrats in the UK.

Fiscally conservative is oxymoron because you could be fiscal and be liberal or whatever.

RE: Whats the deal with the NDP? Are they similar to a 3rd party in the states?

Yes, they're basically hard core socialists.

They came out of the CCF, a group of farmers who wanted to form communist collectives.

They're the party of ferret jugglers, union boys and people like Svend Robinson, a progressive homosexual who just happened to steal a diamond ring worth tens of thousands of dollars at auction, and avoided jail by crying on camera and saying he was stressed out and suffering from a mental illness and how dare we judge him.

Misery loves company. Now people with any concience or sense in Canada can start hating their prime minister as much as we in the US hate Bush. Plenty of discontent to go around. When will people wake up and stop electing these jerks?

People with a conscience voted Conservative.

People who didn't mind billions of dollars being stolen voted Liberal.

You will find at the end of this government that abortion is still legal, there will be some form of SSM, and that the economy is doing better. You will have less taxes, more money in your pocket, and less onerous laws.

    Don't fret.

Democratic socialists, actually. The ones responsible for universal healthcare.

Actually, they supported public ownership of key industries, as well as universal healthcare, pensions, etc. Left-leaning, yeah, but hardly communists.

As opposed to your Conservative candidates who smuggle booze and Mercedes? Ditch the homophobia, ditch the financially-better-than-thou Conservative attitude (I still remember Mulroney's defecit), ditch the lies, and maybe you'll have some credibility.

Socialists? What's the difference between democratic socialists and other sort? Kind of like saying "blonde crack whore" vs "brunette crack whore".

    Like they tried in Russia?

Or your candidates who steal $50,000 rings and then complain they're mentally ill?

Mulroney's deficit was DIRECTLY attributable to the excesses of his predecessor. Keep in mind it's always the conservatives that have to clean up after the socialists. Like Mike Harris after Bob Rae

I didn't say this, but it WAS well said.

" I'm not a huge Stephen Harper fan and did not vote conservative, but to put him and Bush in the same group is a fallacy.

For starters, Harper has a degree in economics. It would shock me if Bush could even spell economics.

The circumstances of our country compared to America's do not warrant a foreign policy in line with theirs, and I am confident that Mr. Harper is shrewd enough to realize that.

I would go so far as to say that the reason Mr. Harper scares so many people is the fact that he is a man of obvious intelligence, who has both the will and ambition to produce an efficient mandate, even with a minority government.

That's always scary if you disagree with someone's policies. All this talk about a hidden right wing agenda though? Please. If Mr. Harper stays true to his word and allows non-partisan voting on issues of morality, then the Canadian people will truly get what they ask for. What's so scary about that?

Bush "graduated" from Yale. It would shock me if he could spell Yale. And I'm not just being a good little Bush-basher. I really do believe Bush to have serious mental dificiencies that put him on the level of a small child intelligence-wise. Could stem from being a clone, which my research indicates he may very well be.

Do you really need to me to explain the difference? Democratic socialism believes the state needs to provide basic human rights for all (health care, basic living requirements such as shelter and food, legal advice, etc), and thus must control these "key" industries because a pure capitlist system will not. It is far different from the centrally-planned economy of a socialist state. Leave your fucking generalizations at home.

No. Like they use in Sweden. This isn't the cold-war anymore - crying Russia doesn't work any longer.

Did I defend Svend? I think the man is a moron - I'm just saying the NDP doesn't have a monoply on moronic candidates (see Stockwell Day).

    Another blatant lie.

"In 1984 Mr. Mulroney campaigned and indicated that we were $170 billion in debt courtesy of the Liberal Party and this was going to sink us under a whole margin of debt. Mr. Mulroney's government was going to fix this when it took office. From 1984 to 1993 the Mulroney government ran up the debt from $170 billion to approximately $450 billion. The Liberals continued on and ran it up to $580 billion."

However, by the end of the Liberal era, we were running massive surpluses, not a defecit. Paul Martin bailed Canada out of Mulroney's debt. He didn't save us from shit... His failed Meech Lake Accord alone cost almost half a billion dollars.

As for the attacks on Bob Rae - I'm not a huge fan of the man. But to say he is symbolic of the Left/Right relationship in Canada is a blatant falsehood. He took over during a large recession. He merely underestimated the recession when attempting to mitigate with Keynesian economics, and then became less popular when cutting programs to reduce the defecit.

I can't handle your fucking propaganda.

Having seen public housing and public health care I moved out to the USA where you gotta pay to play but you get what you pay for.

Sweden, where nobody can afford anything, and prisoners can bring their wives and kids into jail with them where they can have more kids and basically live in a commune more than a correctional facility?

There's a FAR CRY from forgetting which way the Niagara river flows (did you know?) and BLATANTLY STEALING.

Do you understand how this stuff works? Like compound interest? And BTW I am not interested in Mulroney, but in Conservatives. Mulroney was a tax and borrow Tory, not a true Conservative.

Well sure, rip off the poor and EI to pay for it.

Borrowed $10 BILLION IN ONE YEAR. Spent not a penny in infrastructure or business but instead gave grants to various lesbian wholefood vegan activist collectives and other ferret juggler dopeheads. Was amazed that the lenders expected money back with interest and that Keynes was wrong.

When most people are educated and start thinking for themselves.

Most of conservative gains were in rural areas where education is more limited than in urban areas.

The real question is, when will people wake up and realize that these people are not being elected, but being placed there by forces higher than most know exist, and put a stop to it?
