how hard is it to learn?
i have taught my self guitar and banjo and i was wondering how hard fiddle would be to learn,
It looks fun, but also a bit complicated.

My backgrounds are in folk guitar and clawhammer banjo, also i can't read music, have no desire to learn,
    :)

when i was younger, say 7 or 8, i learned at the university of alabama music hall with some method called...the suzuki method...they put tape on the violin to represent frets...it's a really wierd way of learning to me...i would rather learn to read music if i was going to play the violin...but if i was going to play bluegrass sort of fiddle music, i would want to find someone who knows already and get them to show me some tricks.

i suggest learning to read music. it's not that hard and you could probably get better faster if you did. if you don't want to though, just go to a music store and ask them to stick the tapes on the fingerboard for you and you could probably just play by ear. judging by your musical background, you'd probably do great playing by ear. once you learn the basic technique and things, violin's not hard to play. good luck!:)

i play violin and have been playing for 8 years. Violin is said to be the hardest instrument there is to learn.

When you say fiddling, i'm not sure if you mean just dicking around and playing random notes or actually taking the time to learn and get to know the instrument. Either way it's going to be hard because even if you decided not to learn all the notes, you are still going to need to learn proper technique.

    Hi jay,

go with your desire and face the complications when they catch up. Who else but you will know how hard it is ... and you are your own best teacher always.

Fiddle playing is a lot like singing and dancing at the same time, yeah with a strange wooden body. Eventually it takes you to heaven (if not hell) :).

Just start (and enjoy to be able to make terrible noises ;) )

    Happy scratching !
