I found mine at www.amazon.com for about $40AU, which is probably about 23 pounds for you. There are quite a lot of copies, secondhand and new from Asian countries that still print it.
Everywhere I look it cost a small fortune. Have some mates in Asia, might e-mail them and ask them to have a look for it. AUD$40 is €25 which is a bit steep, or maybe I'm just a tight bastard, who knows.
No, youre not a tight bastard, I dont like to pay more than $10AU for my books, but it looks like One Straw is one of those rare ones youll have to pay a little extra for. I went looking for it in every secondhand bookshop in town and they all had waiting lists of people for every copy that came into the stores.
Spacer, your sig cartoon is absolutely hilarious. I just sat here watching it for a while, laughing my ass off. Now, what is the deal with this book, what's it about?
Its basically about a guy from japan who abandoned his profession as a scientist and stayed on his father's farm to research the most natural ways of farming as opposed to the new destructive methods such as chemical/Gm farming. He even goes so far as to offer methods which are even more natural than traditional organic farming. The book is basically what the title suggests - An introduction to Natural farming. The book contains a whole load of philisophical ideas that I think can be valuable to anyone. If you're interested in agricultural science, alternative living, philosophy or conservation then read it for sure!
His modus operandi is "The ultimate goal of farming is not the growing of crops, but the cultivation and perfection of human beings".
Oooh, sounds interesting.....do you think Borders would carry it? I want to cultivate a small garden in my backyard and do it very naturally, so this souds like it could help me.....
Publishing companies in India and some other countries have started re-printing the book because it is in high demand, there is a slight chance you could order the book in especially. Other than that you'll probably have to order it from the net - seriously, EVERYONE should read it.
Check out these links. Some great interviews with him, really interesting. http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=143227 http://www.seedballs.com/gmmfpa.html http://www.motherearthnews.com/top_articles/1982_July_August/The_Plowboy_Interview__Masanobu_Fukuoka
Found the book on the net at only £5.99 which is only €8.70 or US$10.50. Have it ordered! http://www.play.com/play247.asp?pa=search&searchtype=bookall&searchstring=one+straw&page=search&Go.x=0&Go.y=0
Finished the book. Everyone has to read this, it's just amazing, everything about it was great, best book I've read in ages!!!! So get to it folks.
awwwww....how nice I liked what he had to say about science and the aquisition of knowledge. Those damn scientists *shakes fist in anger*. Fukuoku has the respect for nature that humanity needs.
