you have to FEEL the music to "learn" to dance. i suggest "teaching" yourself to dance kinda free style first....

Everyone can dance. No buts, ands or exceptions.

I suggest you start dancing by yourself, with no set moves or anything. Go on a music hunt for music that inspires you. Try something by Karen Savoca or Delerium. Dance from your belly.

Edit: There's an old African Proverb that I love: If you can talk you can sing; if you can walk you can dance.

Nono no no. Don't try to remember any moves at all. Start at the beginning. Turn on some music that at least makes you think about getting the shivers. Then don't move. Just stand there and bring your attention to your belly. How does it feel? Breathe. Okay, now if your belly feels like moving, hold back a bit, but let it move. Try to hear the music as from your belly. Build up the energy a bit.

There's one thing you need to do. Read 'Connections' by Gabrielle Roth. That'll tell you how to really dance. She doesn't talk like I do at all, by the way. And it's a funny book, so you'll get a lot of entertainment out of it, too.

We have come to be danced
    Not the pretty dance
Not the pretty pretty, pick me, pick me dance
But the claw our way back into the belly
Of the sacred, sensual animal dance
The unhinged, unplugged, cat is out of its box dance
The holding the precious moment in the palms
Of our hands and feet dance.

We have come to be danced
Not the jiffy booby, shake your booty for him dance
But the wring the sadness from our skin dance
The blow the chip off our shoulder dance.
The slap the apology from our posture dance.

We have come to be danced
Not the monkey see, monkey do dance
    One two dance like you
One two three, dance like me dance
but the grave robber, tomb stalker
Tearing scabs and scars open dance
The rub the rhythm raw against our soul dance.

We have come to be danced
Not the nice, invisible, self-conscious shuffle
But the matted hair flying, voodoo mama
    Shaman shakin' ancient bones dance
The strip us from our casings, return our wings
Sharpen our claws and tongues dance
The shed dead cells and slip into
The luminous skin of love dance.

We have come to be danced
Not the hold our breath and wallow in the shallow end of the floor dance
But the meeting of the trinity, the body breath and beat dance
The shout hallelujah from the top of our thighs dance
    The mother may I?
Yes you may take 10 giant leaps dance
The olly olly oxen free free free dance
The everyone can come to our heaven dance.

We have come to be danced
    Where the kingdom's collide
    In the cathedral of flesh
To burn back into the light
To unravel, to play, to fly, to pray
    To root in skin sanctuary
We have come to be danced
    We have come.

for years i had a hangup about dancing. i never had any formal 'movement' classes as a kid (i was an art geek!) and never learned HOW to move my body. i think some people literally need to be trained how to move.
    some things that helped me:
    a) well, i got older and started chillin with people who were freaky when they danced and realized that it didn't MATTER, as long as you're having fun
    b) i signed up for a martial arts class - capoeira - helped me a HUGE amount. do they have capoeira round you? usually classes are pretty inexpensive. there, they literally drilled the moves into me, till it became second nature. now i can play the tambourine (harder than you think!), sing, and dance all at once. i NEVER would have been able to do that two years ago
    c) it's all about your mind. if your mind is relaxed, your body'll be relaxed, and vice versa. sometimes i'm somewhere where people around me are dancing amazingly well, and i feel inhibited. so i force myself to relax. like, i'll just jump around and spin and have fun, and not look at those around me.
and you know the crazy thing? this, coming from a white girl who's got no game. people all around me compliment me on my dancing. because i've got a smile on my face and emotion in my body. that's all.
try it. oh, and by relaxing - whatever that means to you. have a drink! who cares. smoke some relaxing herbs - that really helps me a lot. eat some relaxing foods.

dance classes are lame and only force you and tie you down to stereotype moves for the most parts...why not developing and improvising your own style instead, wouldn't that be more hippish?

its a monern dance class.. it's all about free movment and finding what ways your own body moves good. i talked with the teacher and told her all my "problems" and she said .. "don't sweat it. just go with the flow of your body."

she's really cool. i told her i had been praticing at home, she giggled and said .. "good. thats probably all you really need."
