Your new burner will most likely come with authoring software.
If not, Nero 6.5 or better comes complete with all you need
to make your DVDs play on any player. And there are several
other programs that can do it too.

Well your dvd write will burn copy's without a problem,
however if u rent a DvD or try to burn a DvD u bought in the store, you wont be able to burn it without doing something.

DvD's have anti copy protection, which makes ur software unable to burn the dvd.
However, there is software called DvD Decryptor, if you download that, just put the dvd you want to burn into your dvd reader and let it crack ur dvd.
(it will copy files all the files cracked and well to your hard disk with maximum quality)

Then u need software called DVD Shrink to open those files and make it fit on a single 4,7GB DvD, again, no quality will be lost and the dvd will be a exact copy of the original only without protection... :)
DvD Shrink can immediatly write to a DvD when it's done analyzing and decoding the DvD files if you have Nero installed :)

    Hope this answered your question

well first you need to figure out what kind of media you are going to burn.. weither your going to used DVD+R or DVD-R.. i recommend +R... Next you are gonna need a program to break the dvd protections so that you can "back them up" i recommend either Any DVD or Region Free DVD+CSS.. they both work rather well just find which one works best for you... next your gonna need the actual program to burn the dvd's.. i highly recommend DVD Shrink.. this program is the best in my opinion.. it gives you the option to change with quality settings to menus.. extras.. or the actual movie part of the dvd.. i love that feature.. this program will allow you to back up your dvd into an ISO file or burn it directly to a dvd... now just as an added tip check to see if your dvd burner supports BOOK TYPE... this niffty tool allows you to burn the dvd so that when you insert it into your dvd player it will reconize it as an actually DVD ROM and not a + or -R.. i have used this with my LITE-ON drive and it works wonders.. i have not had a single problem.. now comes the all important issue of which company to buy from as far as burnable media.. i highly recomment VERBATEM... (i think that is how they spell it).. they are the best in my opion and i havent had a bad burn yet.. word to the wise.. stay away from MEMOREX... i have herd too many horror stories with this media.. now to close out this rather lengthy post i must recommend using DVD+R's if your burner supports it.. most players support this media and it works great with BOOK TYPE if you decide to use it.... HAPPY BURNING!!!

Burning is kind of old news. Divx seems to be more popular now to back up movies.

i dont agree.. divx is great and all but if you have a hard drive big enough you can back up a lot of dvds in there entirety if you wish.. when you have to shrink a movie down to 4.7 GB there is some quality loss but not as bad as divx.. plus you still have all the menus and special featues.. not to mention all the audio quality.. i still keep the 5.1 Codecs on my dvd's.. if you dont know they are burned you wouldnt know the diffrence .. divx is sketchy sometimes.

    Thats the one...
Have 'backed up' scores of rented dvd's using shrink.. Works great.
can leave all the shit out in reauthor so only end up with feature.
And nero will burn after and even turn off machine when done.

2minutes to setup.. start.. go to bed,, wake up and there is your dvd
    waiting in tray.
