Extra-sensory perception, or ESP, is the name given to any ability to acquire information by means other than the five canonical senses (taste, sight, touch, smell, and hearing), or any other sense well-known to science (balance, proprioception, etc). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extrasensory_perception I have a couple of theories myself, I'll wait and leave the space unbiased for now before speaking up.
We would live our lives connected to the ebb and flow of nature, for example - weather conditions, wind, rain. We could almost feel the Earth's moods as well as each others and work on healing minds, human and animal, as well as ecosystems. People would abandon fickle things like the acquisition of power and material possessions because they will be connected to the great spiral which encompasses all things and would see and hear beyond such things that bring false happiness. Perhaps people would abandon the idea of happiness all together, as well as sadness and simply flow with things. Humanity would form one giant consciousness which would meld with the consciousness of the earth and all the life contained in it. I guess it depends on how deeply our esp branches out, because you could consider the idea of one big consciousness or you could think about people being able to hide their thoughts and retain their individuality. I don't know, just my rant
I agree with you completely on the collective consciousness, part. The biggest problem and at the same time pleasure from ESP would be the fact that people would be communicating less and less with each other, face to face. People would prefer to communicate telepathically versus verbally. At the same time, as the collective consciousness grows, more and more people in everyday society would walk around and make strange faces. Why strange faces? As more and more people mentally bind to one another, different people's opinions and philosophies will begin to clash together. Resentment for each other will grow more and more psychologically, and even faster if pre-existing physical resentment already floors the ever growing pile. Some of that resentment would never go away. Sometimes physical and psychological wrongs by pass the point of fixation. One can be forgiven, but one can never be forgotten. Building a card house out of resentment, as more and more piles atop, people become frustrated. People begin to feed on each other’s happiness, trying to make up for their own misery. People with stronger minds will try to gain forth power. The more information someone knows about someone else, the more the psychological conversation becomes more one sided. People will use ESP to their advantage. They will use it for evil, to pester others, to make their minds think nasty thoughts, to jeer at another for being different. ESP will to be studied. It will be the biggest contriversiality. Skeptics will rise and claim its illogical, and impossible. People that believe in a higher power will be split in their views. It will either be viewed as a blessing or a curse. People who have ESP will probably view it as both. People who follow their separate paths from the previous ones mentioned above would most likely apply their own logic to their own spirituality and mentality. Experiments and studies will be conducted. Blood will probably be spelt. More people would be diagnosed with schizophrenia and schizophreniform. For it to become law, someone would have to get diagnosed with it. With the way this nation is getting more and more conservative, very few doctors would want to diagnose somebody with it. Any hospital that makes an ESP diagnosis will be famous. As hospital practices will be outed to the public’s eye, the public will cringe at corruption. As one layer of filth is scraped, another layer of filth is uncovered from beneath. Corruption in society will become the new War on Terror. ESP will become the updated homosexual relationship debate and the same old question with the definition of murder in extension to parasites. Remember of course boys and girls, only as a last resort, in the first trimester, never as a morning after option. More contriversiality will rise naturally to the top. On a positive note people with ESP will be forced to learn to tolerate each other. Name calling and other childish acts will be left behind on the playground yard. People with ESP will be devoured into pop culture. They need to work together to get protected because what society does not understand, society dissects with an air mask, three pairs or thick gardening gloves, and scalpel. What society does not want to touch even with a ten foot pole, society brushes away into the closet of the unknown, of course using an eleven foot pole. Some common ground will have to be set between all the people who take a part of the collective consciousness. Common curtsey principles are appreciated. Its just polite to allow someone the freedom to sleep when one’s physical body is exhausted. It also is polite behavior to not throw out every insult in the giant book of insults at somebody’s head. That really sounds painful to get hit in the head by a book. When the contriversiality dies, those who have ESP will have to unite in the march for freedom. People with ESP will become the guinea pigs of society. As more and more people come together, more and more personal secretes will be spilled. People will meditate more, they would try to zone out of ESP. Some people might experiment with psychedelic drugs. After everyone comes to terms with ESP, more and more people with ESP will reach some form of inner peace. As people with ESP will be discriminated against, people with ESP will have to learn to work together in order to fight for equality. A lot of resentment will exist, but the resentment can be overlooked. People will only become less materialistic if people become less and less selfish. When doctors, lawyers, and politicians begin caring about their clients it becomes a beautiful aspiration that the world needs to view. Conservative and liberal beliefs currently clash each others paths daily. At the same time, is one group really and different then any other. Both groups become spoiled by money that they forget about the things that matter the most. Living in today’s society, people get too fixated upon their money that they don’t even care about themselves any more. I don’t think happiness and sadness will no longer exist. They may eventually neutralize each other out. At this level, the people with ESP would begin to tolerate each other enough to work together. This is a beginning to a pre-existing revolution. One generation mirror reflects the previous proceeding generation. Old theories about ESP will be disproven. New theories will come along.

I do think though that with ESP we would be more closely connected to the energy flows of nature which would make us more wise and possibly counterbalance a lot of the negative effects you described above. You could almost argue that tribal peoples who lived off of the land practiced ESP as a rule.
I can tell you from experience, esp is no fun. Others peoples thoughts feel just like pain. Everyone is already living in the collective consciuousness they just don't realize it. Everyone experiences it subjectively, through there own perceptions and thoughts. Its like your computer being connected to the internet.
That sounds really interesting, would you care to share? Do you think that perhaps in a positive environment, for example, living close to nature, ESP could become more peaceful and therefore bring people closer together?
Agreed....other people thoughts can be a pain in the butt. I'm interested to know about your experience.
It seems that to get mental silence, would have to be at least a couple miles from other humans. Seems to drop over distance. Also seems it depends on what is being thought. Big thoughts can be picked up from thousands of miles away. Or even from distant stars but usually more as a general emotion then something literal. I think most people have a long way to go before esp would make the world a better more positive place. It may work well for small groups. I think a lot of trainning would have to be done for a person to be able to function in life with esp. Terrence Mckenna once said that the people in India all had esp but it doesn't make them like you any better.
I touched on that in the height of my drug use. I was catching things, like words from people moments before they would say them and stuff. There were a many number of things that had me g'd out on esp vibes...but it ultimately compiled with other factors that led to my demise. I don't even notice anything anymore. I think drugs had a lot to do with allowing me to push my sensory perception and concentration in my mind.
They say that coincidences are actually psychic messages that are telling you something. Most people though, ignore them as these coincidences. If you accept that what you are seeing and being told is more than happenstance, you will be able to look beyond this to see a more apt message, perhaps the real message.
