Anyone else love War movies? They're extremely powerful and moving. And really, really fuckin' intense. I love Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Apocalypse Now(not really a war movie), Saving Private Ryan. Still have quite a few to see, but definitely my favorite genre.
I loved Full Metal Jacket. It's just too bad that Lee Ermey (the sergeant) parodies himself at every chance he gets (ex. Toy Story, Saving Silverman). Haven't seen Platoon or all of Apocalypse Now. I've seen bits and pieces on TV, but the commercial interruptions just ruin the feeling of it. Saving Private Ryan was great as well.
Yeah, Lee had a TV show called Mail Call where he answered people's questions about the military, or something of the sort. I'm pretty ignorant on it, but I know it existed. Still being the crazy drill sarge he is.
So much wisdom and insight about human nature and reality comes from war films, let me add some more - - The Thin Red Line - Gallipoli - Catch 22
It takes place during the Vietnam war, but that's about it. Despite a couple battle scenes, which aren't emphasized very heavily, its mostly just a twisted drama/thriller. It follows the mission of Sheen as opposed to the battles and the war itself, and the insanity that takes place as the boat moves farther down the river. I don't know what to classify it as besides a war movie, but it isn't really about the war.
I don't think you can actually say its not about war. Like a lot of war movies it uses war as a vehicle to draw connections between the capacity of men to love and their capacity to do great evil - you know, the duality of man, like Full Metal Jacket. Thats what i got from AC Redux anyway. Its still a war film.
It's about what war and death do to the mind and how it can drive anyone to the edge. It deals with much deeper issues on war.
Yeah, I understand that. I guess I should have said that its not a very traditional war movie, as war movies do deal with some deep issues but this movie is completely different from all other war movies I've seen, and doesn't really emphasize the specific war that is going on but violence, insanity and horror in general.
it is a war movie the whole plot of the movie is from the vietnam war the plot of the movie is HEAVLY tied into that war, hes going on a mission in vietnam, against a soilder that is a trader and is attacking troops, dude this is definitly a war movie
No ganja, I get what the guy means...it is an adaptation of Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" of course, which I guess justifies the argument that the storyline is a universal one. He is not saying the movie isn't a war movie, but more that the movie uses war as a vehicle to illustrate the basic universal truths...you with your trippy holistic views should know better than anyone that there is something much deeper going on in that movie. If you're still not convinced, go out and hire Apocolypse Now Redux, it has so much more depth to it than the original film.
