Does anyone else GAIN weight when eating only veggies or the like?

Whenever I go through a veggie or vegan phase, I notice I GAIN weight when it would make more sense to lose it... the stricter I am, the more I gain. I just don't get it. I've been in a mostly raw vegan phase for the last few days, and I am GAINING! It frustrates me to no end... any ideas why this could be?

On the contrary, when I'm in an Omni phase, if I eat a lot of meat, I lose weight, it seems. (Maybe cuz eating meat makes me lose my appetite, LOL)

But anyway, any thoughts are appreciated on this subject.

i don't see why that is. vegetables contain no fat, so they shouldn't make you fat. however, when reading up about fasting, i read that for the first little while, your body actually stores the fat already in your body, to keep you alive. so, it could possibly be that your body is adapting to the change, and just storing the fat incase you need it later.

well, im guessing if youre a vegan you probably eat a lot of noodles and pastas? [i dont really know though] if you eat a lot of pastas and breads and such, you get into the whole carbs thing which will make you gain weight unless you run or exercise and such. carbs give you energy, so when you dont really use them i think they turn into fat. im just getting this all from my small knowledge, cause i run cross country and my coach is always telling us about that. carbs are good is you use them, thats what the whole atkins thing is about, no pastas and breads [or other carbs] and just mainly meat is what makes them loose weight, so far as i know.

so i might be wrong, but id say the best thing for you to do is just exercise and run a lot to use up what you eat.

Actually no, I have problems with gluten so I eat little or no wheat.. the only grains I ever eat are corn and rice, and even then only a little bit at a time.

Yeah, yeah, yah me I did (gained)! I went on like an all fruit diet where you could eat as much as you wanted because it was fruit and blah-blah-blah and I couldn't lose weight that way either. I guess it's because even though it is healthy you're still consuming a lot of calories and when dieting you should watch your caloric intake.

Well, fruit is still a lot of sugar, which is a lot of carbs... so maybe that is why. I try to stay away from sugar too, I don't eat a lot of that either.

I've discovered this diet to work well for me although I don't recommend it because it's not a healthy diet. I have one Red Bull at 7am and an 8oz cup of grapefruit juice around 10am, another Red Bull at noon and a final one at 4pm before I leave work. I drink water all day long though. Then when I get home I eat something for dinner and then have a small snack and usually I drink Gatorade while home. So far I've lost 15 pounds this way.

I have had this problem up until a few months ago. My BMI (Body Mass Index) hit 30. When I was eating meat I was always underweight. When my weight was climbing I knew I had to do something. I had a drastic think about what I was eating. I also cut out a lot of things out of my diet. The trouble was I was not sensible about what I was eating. I don't eat crisps or drink sugary drinks. These were the biggest culprits. As a result I have been loosing weight at a steady pace. Over a period of the last few months I have gone from a BMI of 30 down to 27. I am still over weight but I am slowly but surely loosing it. If you want a good diet advice avoid drinking soft drinks.
I avoid the sugar free versions as well. The reason is that it contains aspartame which is a neurotoxin. Aspartame plays havoc with the chemical balance in my brain. I identified it as a migraine trigger.

you loose weight while having meat in your diet because it contains alot of fat. i've been watching my sister on the akins diet for about 3months now (i dont agree with the akins, even before i became veg which was only 2week ago). the whole akins thing is to eat less than 20g of carbs per day (a small bag of walkers crisps contains 17g of carbs), so that is quite hard. fat makes you feel fuller quicker so you tend to eat less. which is true, my sister has lost alot of weight, but damaged her health in the process, after just 3 months on the akins she has kidney stones.

its natural sugar that fruit contains called glucose & fructose (fruit sugar). the body turns glucose in to energy by using oxygen.
