do you consider non-fertilized eggs to be vegetable or meat?

Perhaps the living conditions of free-range chickens are not as diseased as battery cages, but they are still far from clean -- and the porous/fragile egg shells are perfect hosts for microbes like salmonella. Besides that, each egg is about 70% fat and contains about 200mg of cholesterol as well as being high in sulfur containing amino acids. I don't care if you eat eggs or not, but please don't attempt to label them as healthy because they are far from it.

And while I also respect your opinion, I dare say that the first statement here is possibly one of the most ignorant statements I have heard regarding animal cruelty.

Go watch some of the PETA videos about how chickens are treated.

Yes, you CAN just wait for a chicken to lay an egg.

But do you think that an egg per day is enough to drive the economy of BILLIONS of humans that eat multiple eggs every day?

No. Chickens are injected with hormones that make them produce eggs faster. They are bred to fatten up quick and die young. They can't live long past their age of maturity, simply because their legs are so weak that they can't support the weight, and their hearts and bodies become so clogged with fat and cholesterol that they'll die from heart disease or stroke alone.

That, and then industrialize it. Take thousands of chickens and stuff them in one room. Never change the bedding, just let them take a shit everywhere and live in it. Don't even bother putting hay on the ground, hay is a waste of company expenses.

In today's society, getting eggs from a hen isn't about waiting, it's about extracting.

This is why I find it objectionable. Not because they "serve" us; servitude itself as a concept isn't the problem. It's the implementation of servitude that we use that is the problem.

Many animal-rights activists, myself included, will tell you that the chicken and egg industry is THE WORST and MOST CRUEL of all the meat and animal industries.

To me, taking unfertilized eggs from a chicken is kind of like taking unfertilized eggs from a person. There's more where that came from; not a limitless supply, but enough to make a few losses not matter in the long run. Does the chicken care? Probably about as much as a human would.

This is also a very good point. One shouldn't steal from others, even if they are merely animals. That egg used to be a part of the chicken's body, you know ... it just wouldn't be nice to steal it.

It's not really a trade then, is it? It's more like eminent domain. "Here, we're taking your eggs and you have no say in the matter, but we're going to at least feed you so that you can give us more eggs. When you're done giving eggs, we'll stop feeding you."

Doesn't sound very nice does it?

    *laughs* eggs aren't either.

In the food pyramid, they are tied in with protein [also known as the meat group] because that's what their main purpose is in a nutritional sense.

But, they aren't a plant, or meat ....so it's neither.

I don't care, either if it's free range or not, I still don't eat eggs. I am vegan because I don't believe in using animals for our benefit like that.

I think it should be mentioned that EACH EGG from a factory farm (which is where most eggs are "produced) is THIRTY hours that a hen sufferd in a tiny cramed cage to produce that egg. So your 3-egg omelet was 3.75 days of suffering.
We often forget about the smallest victims. "They are just birds". Just like we are "just people" and all other creatures are "just creatures".
