Do you have to do drugs to be a "true" hippie?

I don't do drugs. Never have, never will. Not even pot. It's so not worth it to me. But I've heard a lot of people either say that you have to be totally wacked out on drugs to be a "real" hippie or they refer to the hippie lifestyle as inevitably including drugs.

I consider myself a hippie, for many reasons, but drug use is NOT one of them. Who's with me?

So I guess that means all the kids that dress up like 50cent and abuse drugs are hippies?

I don't know what a hippie is nor do I care but I know theres always some people that do drugs in any group and others that choose not to.

Hey man, if you can hit that higher plane of conciousness that comes with the hippie lifestyle without using drugs, more power to you! That's great. Personally, I find that drugs bring me to realizations that the sober mind is incapable of opening up to.. But, if you're happy without drugs, that's awesome.. You'll be healthier than I ever will.

I totaly agree with minkajane, being a hippy isn't contingent on drug use. Just being unashamed of your beliefs no matter how strange or obscure they may be is a good place to start.

    Fuck no. :)
The hippie sub-culture is about a shared feeling of peace and love.
Drugs are sometimes added in for personal experience and what not, but by NO means is it necessary.

Neither is dressing like one, either. I usually get called a "hippie without the clothes" when I don't wear hippie clothes. It's all about the beliefs. :)

I think the whole point is that nothing is necessary, it's all in our minds! Or maybe thet whole point is that there is no point :) Ah, who cares, let's just do what we want :)

No one "has" to do drugs. But reaching some altered states, by whatever means work for you, helps you cast off the Status Quo and see life from a different perspective.

Drugs are not the only way. But, finding a way to SEE and EXPERIENCE through different eyes is neccesary to break through all the bullshit the Status Quo forced down our throats.

I feel there are some people who NEED some acid, because they can't get through the bullshit. But some people have imaginative and transendental enough thought processes to not need it.

My advice, the more Status Quo you are, the more you probably need weed and acid, at least for a while, until you see the lies of the Status Quo.

No of course not. There are alot of hippies who have quit doing drugs(like my bestfriend) or who have never ever done it. Don't have to do drugs to be a hippie. Don't worry your not the only one.;)

It is not about doing drugs or the way you dress. It is a state of mind and of being. Some people choose to do things others don't. I would never say that you have to do drugs to be a "true hippy". Just be yourself, if people do not like you for who you are, screw them!

if you don't do them, that's ok.

if you are against them, and encourage other people to stop or never start, and can't back up your reasoning why, that's closed minded. and totally not hippie.

but it doesn't matter! just be yourself, don't let opportunities pass you by but don't take chances you don't want to take. decide for yourself!

Its about reaching a point of awareness, a certain state of mind. If you use drugs to reach that state of mind, good for you. If you reach that state of mind through sobriety, good for you. If you reach that state of mind through sobriety, and then use drugs, awesome.

As long as you aren't narrow-minded about drug use and drug users in general.

You know, though drug culture was a big part of the hippie revolution, it is way overstated. Their political opponents tended to exaggerate the drug aspect of the lifestyle in an attempt to further discredit their beliefs.

i think what he meant to say was
"you don't have to do anything to be anything because you shouldn't try to be anything."
