So. I like how, in the state of Wisconsin, if you don't have a car, you're pretty much fucked. As for buses and taxis, they are almost non existent. Their sorry excuse for a taxi, you have to make an appointment wayyyy ahead of time, and on most days they are only open til 6 PM. The transit is a fucking JOKE. There aren't enough good sidewalks and such to travel outside of one town, by foot. I'm totally going to our state government and proposing a better system. Totally. And if they don't want to hear it, I am totally organizing a rally. Just thought I'd state that, because I'm pretty much RAGING about the fact that I can't GET anywhere without a car. I was so serious for a long time, about getting a horse...no lie. But, big surprise it's illegal to ride a horse around. Hmm I wonder why? Aw, you poor oil companies, shaking in your boots at the thought of people possibly turning to other means of transportation. I say eat it, to them. ROAR! I'm so sick of it, it hurts. And I'm not going to sit there and bitch about it anymore, I'm going to fucking change it . Who the hell is with me?
^^ Why, because conforming to the problem, is easier than trying to change it? Good on you, Bekka. Take it as far as you can, and nail those fuckers. If I lived in the state, I'd be with yah!
Has anyone read the book "a walk in the woods" by Bill Bryson. Basically he walked the appelation trail which goes from north to south through the forests of america. Its apparently a very long hard trail. He did notice though that when he got to most towns how he was physically unable to walk because there was nowhere to walk without risking getting run down. (obviously this wasn't his biggest problem being that there were bears in the woods). America and the UK have this whole obesity thing going on at the moment and it is no wonder because noone walks anymore. Its the simplest way to keep fit. I agree totally with this thread. Public transport in the uk needs to be improved although I'd say the buses where I live run regularly enough and on time and they have priority in the cities so there are few hold ups. With regards to taxis I swear most taxi drivers get their licenses free with their cornflakes in the morning because they scare the hell out of me with the way they drive. Walking is good people.
I think it's funny that I can't walk for more than a mile before someone asks if I need a ride. Duuuuuuhhhhhh. . .
I KNOW!!!!! I walked to work almost everyday last summer, and people would ask me the same. Or ask me if I needed "Help" [assuming I was homeless or something] PUH-LEEZE!
That's how it is around here, you can't walk most places without getting basically run over. A lot of our country roads [which you have to travel on, because you can't possibly walk the express way] dont even have shoulders to walk on.... It sucks big time.
I had/have a car, that's broken. And I don't WANT to get another one because I don't WANT to spend my money/support the oil companies. Nor do I feel like being a part of the reason our earth is going to shit. IS THERE A PROBLEM WITH THAT?! Tell me WHY it is essential to have a [working] car?! The only reason I EVER would get it repaired is if I had to drive a long distance somewhere [ahem, inbloom] I'm sick of being a part of the oil-dependent population. The more people that depend on cars, the more this chaos is going to keep swiveling out of control. I'd much rather walk places.... and if for any reason I can't walk, I'd like to at LEAST be able to take some sort of public transportation. If you're going to use automobiles carpooling/bussing is a GOOD thing. Not to be a snot, but why are you even in the protest forums if you just think submissing to the issue is the best solution?! EDIT TO SAY: The BIGGEST reason people use cars are because of this issue; but that's not DOING anything to help develop better means of transportation, now is it?! The second reason people use cars is STATUS ....Everyone around here seems to think you're either jobless, or homeless if you walk everywhere I live in a rich county in the U.S., and let me tell you, I'm UTTERLY SICK of all these people who think their "Lexus" makes them a better person.
THANK YOU!!!! I'm SO sick of everyone pressuring me to get my car fixed, and this and that. Fuck that. And yeah, I'm totally going to...I'm not sure how I'm going to go about it yet. First, I have to formulate a plan, of how I would want things to be... probably write a short essay, round up some people who agree with me and want things to change to... Ultimately take it to the courts/government of course... If anyone has any further ideas let me know. I'm highly persuasive in person, so this could work to my benefit
What about biking? I know there is still a good chance of getting hit, but usually its not that bad. I have seen people in the city streets on bikes, stopping at lights and stuff just like a car would and nobody has any problem with that. Bikes are also cheaper than cars, and you can get around much faster than walking. I totally agree with your stance on oil dependancy and you should get out there and rally this out.
Apples, I have the same problem. There are no bus systems where I live (granted it is a small town), but my boyfriend who lives in Ann Arbor takes the bus and rides his bike everywhere...he doesn't have or need a car...of course I need one to go visit him because there isn't a bus system that travels to Ann Arbor from my town (just a half hour away)... In fact, there isn't even a bus system that goes from Ann Arbor to the airport in Detroit...less than a half hour away. It's ridiculous. I blame the idea of suburbs... Suburbs suck.
Where do you live, is it a big town. You have to remember that the public transportation company wants to make money. So a little town isn't going to cut it.
