Researcher Jean-Louis Martin of the Universite Claude Bernard in Lyon, France, found (for a December British Medical Journal article) that consuming cannabis (marijuana) doubled motorists' likelihood of a fatal auto collision, and alarming news headlines about the report followed. Less prominently noted in the article, and consequently in news reports, was that drivers impaired by alcohol were six times more likely than an unimpaired driver to have a fatal collision, thus suggesting that the generally illegal drug, cannabis, is only one-third as dangerous for drivers as the legal drug, alcohol. [New Scientist, 12-2-05]

(although I am in no way promoting the prohibition of alcohol!!!!!)

Well, it's one thing that alcohol has potential to be more dangerous (and often is).

It's another thing that you can have a beer and be just fine, but have a hit of bud and get a little high. That's probably why alcohol is still legal. It has "greater potential" for responsible use.

What do the rest of ya's say about this?

Alcohol and weed both operate off of personal tolerance. Some people can drink a beer and be fine while others are shithoused off one beer. Same thing for weed, some people can have a hit and not be effected while others get a nice little high off of one hit. It is all personal tolerance.

I think the main reason for the legality of booze is the fiscal success and economic importance they bring to the country. The large booze companies are able to give money to the gov't as well as employee a large number of people. Especially the large beer breweries (coors, budweiser).

Well I agree with you but my point was i wish studies like that were more widly known. I have lost friends because they have such a closed minded view of marijuana. I have had someone tell me dead serious not to come crying to them when I funked out of school! like she seriously belives that stoners are all bordering on metally handicapped after a few years! If more people were aware that its not a killer drug and its not going to stop you from functioning in society we would all be better off

I thought dutch studies showed: (not sure if they're dutch)

weed is 1.8 times the risk of a sober person to cause an accident.
Alcohol (even on the exact allowed limit) is 8 times as much likely to cause an accident.

statistics are bullshit anyway, nothing can be learnt from them, they can only be used as general references and indications as to whether some theory, oppinion, or hypothesis is accurate or not, and even then, you cant properly convert the universe into single statistics
