I want a ferret. I cant remember if ive seen one in real life, but the photos of them are soooo cute!
Does anyone here own one or know someone who owns one or know anything about them? What are there personalities like? Are they high/low mainainence?
    Carpet sharks are the bomb.

I have a friend that owns 2 ferrets and they are fairly expensive to keep. Especially for medical reasons.

id say pretty high maintenance. they are extremely hyper active and dont like to be caged for long periods of time. their cages also need to be very large with lots of tunnels and things for them to hide in and play with....they get bored easily. they can also get fleas just like any cat or dog....i had a friend with a ferret and her flea problem was beyond belief. the poor thing was suffering so badly (covered in fleas 24 hours a day). i tried to tell them to do something but the problem was too large by then..their whole house was infested and nothing seemed to help. another girl i knew kept her ferret in a tiny cage outside...the poor thing spent all day and night sleeping in one single spot. again, i tried to talk to her about what she was doing and to no avail....the ferret ended up dying long before his time.:( all ferrets of course have different temperments...some ive known have been so sweet and others really aggressive. id also suggest on getting two of them so that they have a friend and someone to play and snuggle with.

Before you get any pet...MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GETTING INTO!!!

I know someone now who has 2 ferrets and they are soo cute and sooo friendly. She takes care of them and they are so silly! One of them is getting old now too...poor girly.

I also know a guy who had one and unfortunatly the poor thing didn't get the care he needed. He was also pretty bitey and aggressive. He ended up dying as he didn't get the proper diet or care...

They are high maintainance pets and many people say they are like 2 year old children! They get into everything! Also if you are not planning on breeding a female, then you have to get it spayed or it will die. They can be pretty expensive too.

I love ferrets I used to live with someone that had 3...However they do not make good pets for enexperinced pet owners! or people who have never had kids. please please please don't buy one if you don't think your ready for a kid!

    I LOVE FERRETS!

Some folks are dog people, some folks love cats -- me? I love them weasels.

But I totally agree with what the other posters have been sharing. Ferrets are NOT big hamsters.

You pretty much have to "ferret-proof" your house. Kitchen cabnets where you keep cleaners? They have to be saftey-locked as if you had a toddler in the house. Also, you have to be careful if you use any types of "cleaners" for your rugs. Ferrets are very low to the ground. A friend of mine couldn't understand why his ferret was always getting sick -- it was because his mother was constantly putting this "carpet de-odorizer" all over the place.

There's lots of stuff to think about before buying a ferret. As a child I used to have just one ferret (long story, I didn't really buy him, but my older sister and her boyfriend had bought one and then couldn't keep it in the house they where renting.. so she let me keep him) and I can totally say that unless you're going to be hanging out and playing with him/her all the time, you should really buy two ferrets. They're incredibly social animals and I think when I only had the one, he must have been pretty lonely at times when I would be at school or something.

So yea, ferrets rule :) Just make sure you get them from a good breeder as well. I've never had a problem with any of my ferrets, but I have heard horror stories about people who own ferrets that basically just attack them all the time.

    Best of luck,
    Goo

We have 2 ferrets that were given to us by a friend. They are pretty high maintance. If you're still interested, check out Every Ferret message board. They have alot of pictures, health articles and such. It's a good resource if you don't know what's involved in caring for ferrets properly.

I have had three ferrets. All of which died from insulinoma, so research that before you even think about it. There are very high maintenence. They need a diet as close to their natural one as possible, the correct amount of sunlight or they get adrenal disease. Two of my ferrets had adrenal disease (hair falls out and they get thin) and they both had surgery for it. My last ferret had one adrenal gland removed, his spleen removed, and inslet tumors removed, but he still died a half a year later from insulinoma. That is a form of cancer that is 95% un-curable and a horrible thing to go through for me and him.
They are the sweetest, cutest things in the world and I miss mine dearly, but I would never get another. I would never want to go through the pain of one being sick and dying again. All ferrets seem to die of cancer either insulinoma or lymphoma. Your lucky if they live 6 years.
