Would any of ya'll have any advice on building a House(cage) for small critters? I'm getting a hedgie and I wanted to do something other then a fish tank or a normal cage(they can hurt their feet on them) I was thinking of using Plexie Glass for the sides and the "trim" would be wood. However I'm going to make it so thers a little indetion like this |_| so the plexie can slide in and out and later when I want to expand it I can take out that one sheet and wood glue the new section to the the old. Then later when the hedgies have babies and i have to seprate the male I can simply slide the plexie between the two. Does anyone have any suggestions or comments? It would be well recived
Yeah, I do Try here... http://www.cavycages.com/ Most of the cages are for guinea pigs, but if you look in the forums & the photo galleries under "cages for other pets" I know I've seen several for hedgies I've made two of these for my guinea pigs now, a 2x5 and a 3x5... they are oh, so much less expensive than a store-bought cage, you can make them literally as large as you have room for, and they are SO fun to make! love, mom
Oh yeah, couldn't be happier! And uh, neither could my piggies This is their home... it's set up behind the sofa, where they have tons of room to run around & watch what's going on in the house. We've added a ramp to the balcony, and put it up on a table we built to fit it, but other than that this is where my boys live love, mom
That is so great! Thank you for showing a picture Its good to see a picture that isn't site supported ya know? That is really cool. If you don't mind me asking. how much did it cost?
Glad you posted that mama! I was going to send him there. My pigger loved his cavy cage. It gave him so much room to play.
FYI mine was under 40. 20 for the cubes and 20 for the sheet. I got it at a chain sign store I can't remember what it was called. I know you can buy them ready made on ebay, but it is more fun to design your own. If you keep looking you can often find the cubes on sale. I got mine from Target, but I have seen them at walmart and I have heard costco carries them.
No problem. I doubt you're gonna want anything quite as big as ours for a couple hedgies, but here's where our money went: $20 - red coroplast base FREE - white coroplast "leftovers" donated by the sign company (ask... often they'll give scraps if they know it's for a pet cage & not for signs) $30 - 2 boxes of cubes from Target. (the leftovers are zip-tied together for a lovely fold-up playpen) $5 - a year's supply of towels for under-bedding; bought at garage sales $10 - one set of polar fleece, to use as bedding... shop around & you can get pretty darn good deals on this too! I have 4 full sets, since we also use them to line the carpet during floor time. So in all I've spent $40, and they'll last me at LEAST a year. So the cage & playpen cost me $50. And bedding for at least a year cost me another $50, versus the $50 per MONTH it would cost me to keep this monster filled with aspen shavings. In my mind, it's just as important to mention the bedding as the cage... because you only buy the cage once but the bedding has to keep being renewed. Since we switched to fleece about 2 years ago, I figure we've saved over $400! love, mom
Yeah, when I worked at PetsMart I always thought "I wonder how much money they spend to clean out all these cages"
