What I like about about Ravishankar other than his philosophy is that he has never resorted to cheap gimmicks to gain publicity and followers.(like producing gold chains from thin air and holy ash ) Catch the programme on a channel in your country if you can......
I'll have to find out about him - not heard of him before. I thought the post was going to be about Pandit Ravi Shankar - IMHO among the best musicians to grace this planet.
I thought that first as well...and I agree that he is an awesome musician...I had gotten the Concert for Bangladesh DVD for Christmas...and watching him play...its just amazing... plus, of course, his mixings of Eastern and Western music...
I was lucky enough to catch him playing live at WOMAD festival back in the late 90's. Beyond anything else I've ever heard or seen musically by about a factor of a million. Total magic. It is as though God Himself were just channeling this stuff through Ravi Shankar.
As a lifelong ardent lover of Hindustani classical music, I have to say, Ravi Shankar leaves me absolutely cold. His music conveys nothing beyond mathematical calculated skill. No soul. Now Ali Akbar Khan... he was a great musician. The only times Ravi Shankar was passable to me, was in jugalbandhi with Ali Akbar Khan. Truly great sitar players are rare these days, the greatest of our age passed away last year. Ustad Vilayat Khan. He had true soul in his music. Ravi Shankar's work was totally watered down to suit western audiences. On the other hand, his great and completely magical soul-stirring disciple, Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, has performed in many brilliant cross-over albums without ever once compromising the integrity of his musical roots and is perhaps the greatest Hindustani instrumental musician of this age.
Just shows how easy it is to fool people like me. But if Ravi Shankar's music has no soul how can that of his pupil be any better?
What VM Bhatt learnt from Ravishankar was not music, for he already had the music in him. What he learnt was how to express it. The techniques, the math of it, the systems of music. But what he did with that far exceeds anything that Ravishankar ever did.

Bill, and anyone else, you might be interested in www.musicindiaonline.com, which has a wide variety of classical music, both hindustani and carnatic, devotional chants, bhajans, film music and more. There are the very best of artists onthat site, but you have to weed out the mediocre. As for Anoushka, I think she is completely insipid, lacking even her father technical mastery. She's all about appearances, that one. Norah Jones on the other hand, has never sung a note that didn't touch me. Of course she was spared her fathers influence, he having left after knocking her mom up. Her mother, a pianist, was her real musical influence.
