kk, im tryin to create a band. but whenever i write lyrics, they either suck (in the sense that they sound like something every pop band would sing) or they end up being poetry. any suggestions?
Yep. My lyrics are very poetic. But don't do that bullshit that AFI does. Don't just write free-form and then put music to it. Make sure it has verses, choruses, bridges, etc.
write lyrics that mean something to you, not what you think your freinds or a crowd in a gig will think, write them for YOU. Cheers. If i end up poor and homeless, to be remembered as being original would have been worth it. Steve von till-neurosis.
I for one use both kind of lyrics in my scores: The poetry things The pop band things If I write lyrics by my own they end up in beeing to difficult or to popish. So I take the difficult ones and use a dictionary where they give examples on other words that would describe the same thing (I think it is called thesaurus?). So I try to give the lyrics a popish feeling, even if I don't write pop music. I also have to say that my own lyrics are always parodies on pop music. Little funny pieces about sheep and bad hippies. If my lyricist writes lyrics they are mostly so unpopish that I get in trouble with writing music. So I wrote some easy voice parts. Finally I think that poetry lyrics are very great (listen to Jewels & Genesis first LP's) and popish lyrics can be full of sense too (listen to Jewels "0304" and the late Genesis). Use both it is still the best to give your audience a mix of styles. If they are musical or lyrical styles - both is still the best and will make your band unique. But always remember that you write lyrics for yourself. Thats the most important thing.
Well, you can simply use a rhyme dictionary it'd make some influence from itself I#d suggest you to dig in Wiliiam Blake or Geoffry Chaucer stuff, Beatles, Stones, Bob Marley or Chuck Berry lyrics
