These movies changed my perception for the definition of a 'good' film. Prior to watching these I thought of good films as being ones which effectively convey themes through exaggerted reality by doing things like dramatising situations and dialogue. Amelie and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind I think do this very well. Everything about them is so pretty. And I don't just mean immediately obvious stuff like art direction and acting, but the structure and pacing of these films feels very clean, and well thought out. After watching Elephant, Gummo and Kids I realised another completely different way a film can be good. These movies are all strikingly real. The acting is amazing, as is the cinematography. Pacing and structure does not seem to be compromised for dramatic effect but instead to enhance the realism. Maybe there's a bizillion styles films can take which make them 'good', but I'd never seen anything like these and they still feel very refreshing
