Federal law bars both hard liquor and tobacco ads from broadcast media because of the access young children have. Since broadcast is a passive medium, rather than an active, read medium such as a billboard or newspaper or magazine, it has more stringent restrictions than print.
I'm kinda torn on that issue.....IMO I don't think that there should be commercials promoting smoking or boozing but you also have to consider the whole free speech thing for advertisers. WHy should one advertiser get the time to place an ad on the idiot box but not another even if they both can be dangerous. I mean aspirins can do you good every once in awhile but a ton of them will kill you, its the same with alcohol.....in a way
I was only trying to see it from an advertisers point of view. I am really grateful that there arent any ads for smoking or drinking. The thing about alcohol and nicotine is that they can be dangerous but they are readily accepted as normal or okay IMO is really not good because its like kids are growing up and expected to be drinking at a certain age. So really, no it really doesnt bother me that much. I would prefer no ads or crap like that being shoved at people on televison but that aint gonna happen anytime soon. But you do have to consider it like censorship when some people are allowed to sell something bt others can't......and trust me I'm not complaining abuot the lack of ads I'm just being open minded
there are many legal precidents for this. the main criteria is the accessibility issue. If a 18 month old can kind of understand it, cigs and hard alcohol cannot use that medium to advertise.
Its because advertisements are a way for a tobacco company to reel you in for life. And noone wants that.
There's hard liquor commericals on TV all the time................the new Southern Comfort one is pretty nifty.
Bizarrely, they even banned tobacco companies from advertising on billboards in the UK, but Rizla billboards still exist. Perhaps I'm naive but I can't think of a single use for them that doesn't involve smoking. Ah well!
I hate smoking and tobacco companies, but I would like to see TV ads for smoking again just to see how ludicrous they might be. They could be like tampon commercials. They show women swimming, playing tennis, having a blast! And then the spot turns out to be about tampons. What would be the updated version of the Marlboro Man?
