    lol that's kinda funny...

Especially seeing as though true 'hippies' are generally anti-conformity.
Unless of course by 'hippie' you meant a pot smoking tye-dye wearing person who just buys into the label, then I guess they all dress the same..

Hair, cloths, uniform, anything that marks you as a member, or part of any group, is just turning nonconformity into conformity.
I cannot imagin any true Hippie, shutting somone out by the way they dress.
What is the point of anything if you cannot be yourself. And express yourself in anyway you want, think that is philosophy one of being a Hippie.

Earthfog is right. Clothes do not a hippie make. Anyone who says that you can't be a hippie if you don't dress like one just doesn't have a clue. Even non-comformity can become confirmity if everyone wears the same.

Back in the day I wore peasant blouses and bell bottoms or long flowing things and of course the obligatory floppy leather hat. All the girls had the same hairdo (except me) long, straight and parted in the middle. Now I wear whatever feels comfortable, whatever is clean and whatever fits at the moment. My hair is an effin mess and getting grayer by the minute. But I still feel as if "hippie" is as good a label as any for me.

The "what should be" never did exist, but people keep trying to live up to it. There is no "what should be," there is only what is.

Being a hippy is a state of mind, not a fashion show. It's in your heart, not on your back. It's what you do,not what you wear.

    ditto all of the above!

The problem with lables is that they place people in a box of someone else's pre-determined size and shape. Most people won't fit the box but with a little work can be squeezed until they love their little box and begin to proclaim the lable as their own.

I was just talking about this in another thread. I don't wear tie-dye, don't much care for it, but if I'm going to a hippie gathering I don't show up in a business suit either. Jeans and a t-shirt, maybe a denim vest and hat, you know, hippie clothing! I'll dress the part, but I don't wear clothing that shouts, "Look at me! I'm a hippie!"

I feel like I pretty much have "hippie" ideals, but I work for a very conservative organization. I can't dress the way I want to at work. At home I wear patchies and tye dye, but at work I don't. It's really like the others have said, clothes don't make the hippie. It's what's inside that counts.

Inside, inside that's the most important part.
Inside, inside that's where you'll find the heart of the matter."

Personally I like tropical type shirts, I wear what I like, and I'm fortunate to have a job where I can wear whatever I want, and I dress for comfort mostly. Tie dye is cool, too, and patchwork, but then I always feel like I'm wearing some kind of uniform, to tell the truth. I'm too "old" (relative statement) to care anymore what people think. I don't want to fit a mold. I do remember when I was 16, though, I wore the same pair of hand embroidered bellbottom jeans every day for months. (they did get washed occasionally I guess). And I had handmade halter tops that I wore a lot. At 16, fitting in with an identity was important, but it isn't to me anymore. In fact, the opposite is true now.

and who are these people who say "you can't be a hippie if you don't dress like one"? I don't even like the label hippie, but I guess it serves a purpose somehow, when conformity is an issue. But like others have said, it's mostly what's in your spirit and heart, not how you dress. Just be yourself. Start a new trend. :) smiles...

Being a hippy has nothing to do with fashion, in the hey day of it's time most of us wore what was available and comfortable. We chose to dress differently than main stream (parents, etc.) as a way of protesting that control. It was fun to see the reaction of some people to our appearance, but mostly it helped to make us apart of something that related to our ideas and dreams, to bond with others of different race and beliefs and to give us hope for future. These days it seems from what I can figure out now it's just about the 'look' but that can be so faked how can one tell for sure?

    No.

There are no rules. no Boundries. No uniforms. Wear what you want. DO NOT conform. If you like Tye Dye, wear it. If you like button down shirts and sweater vests, wear them.

It is about WHO you are, not what other people think of you.

My son once told me "mom, no matter how you dress you just can't hide the fact that you are a hippy!" I was a little put off at the time, but then I realized that he ment my "true" nature shows through no matter how I dress. I think that is true of most people if you can get past a first visual impression and really see the person.

Hm.. clothes make the man/woman.... Um, If I dress like Einstien will I be smarter? Nope. If I wore my wife's clothes would I be more feminine? Nope.
If I dressed like a ghetto rapper would I be more streetwise? Nah...
My daugter keeps wearing my boxers, and me and my wife share clothes all the time: shorts and tees... What does that make us?

I like that question, can you be a hippie and not dress like one? Well, I say that if you are a hippie then dressing to conform, for work, or to suit someone else means you have created what's known as an internal conflict. You want to conform and be like the rest of the sheep who never make waves (or history either)yet you secretly want to do your own thing. Hippies value natural things, and not interfering with other people's business. So be your natural true self no matter what. If you ever want a job then you might have to restore substantial internal conflict to your daily habits.
