no beer or loud drums at the hippiestead, relayer & terrapin flyer...y'all need to meet some real hippies. hippie culture from the beginning? where ya want to place the starting point? when the beats started calling the young'ens jr. hipsters? the hipsters of the 20's? the tribes that inhabited North America in the 1600's? what about the days of Buddah or Jesus? how about the first group of communicating neanderthals that cooperated as a community?
Bohemian, Beatnik, Hippie, and Punk are just words that mean about the same thing to me. Even tho i am not a punk they seem to state things most directly. Punks are anti-authoritarian, non-conformist, anti-military, anti-capitalist-corporate, anti-nationalist, anti mass-media-mainstream-pop-culture, pro-environmentalist, pro-vegetarianism. Punks are opposed to selling-out and they are very individualistic, and like to Do It Yourself, kind of like the hippie "Do Your Own THing." I'm way more hippy than punk because i have long hair, tho for awhile every piece of clothing i owned was black. I guess it all boils down to avoiding or reducing the usual 100 % All-American mainstream lifestyle. So personally I ride a bike like 2%(?) of americans, am a vegetarian like 5%(?) of americans, and volunteer for Food not Bombs and a Fair-Trade Store, go hiking and biking and camping a lot, only go to local stores, thrift shops, and local music, and go to protests and raiinbow gatherings, all of which are pretty low % for the mainstream News, Sports and Weather crowd. I do some mainstream things like surfing the internet obviously, and i used to own a TV, but i tossed it in the dumpster several years ago, i think that is a pretty key thing to do.
