Ok, I know your going to come down onme for this but I just wanted some honest opinions. In Christianity, there's such an emphasis on chastity and remaining celibate more so than in any other religion I've studied. One simple question:Why? I mean, in Hebrew school I was taught that God encouraged and embraced sex, saying to Abraham "Be fruitful and multiply" I know Christianity has changed in 2,000 years or so, but so many figures in many branches of Christianity, seem to promote the idea that sex is somehow evil and that in the bond of marriage women are subserviant. I know about Original Sin, and the concept that females inherited Eve's wrong doing, but I wanted to know what everyday Christian believers felt about the issue, regardless of doctrine.
    What are your thoughts?

My thoughts are that you have been misinformed.
    Probably on purpose.
This way you not only have an understanding there are flaws in Christianity but you also have an easy time taking them apart.

Just out of curiosity, would you be willing to correct his misinformation?

I would not mind hearing the correction myself.

if you want to follow your religious beliefs, then by all means, don't do it. keep your spirit stronger than your flesh. it's more than i did.

one of the most crucial flaws of Christianity...the separation of spirit and body. There is no wholeness there, there's your spiritual side and your "physical, sinful" side, no togetherness. I firmly believe that the embraced sexual union between male and female would help to balance out a lot of things...the whole absence of sex in Christianity is one of the main reasons i am not a Christian...Jesus was born without a single drop of sperm, there's no penetration there, at all!!! he was BORN OF A VIRGIN...if it should be "as above, so below" ...no wonder so many people have unhealthy sexual relations.

here's one of my favorite tori amos quotes :

I don't have to try in the least to shock people. My beliefs are sufficiently shocking tohttp://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=149141&goto=nextnewest most people. Because we live in a culture where passion and sexuality have been replaced by shame. We are miles away from our hearts, our feelings. In Greek mythology the gods were sleeping with humans all the time. But the Christians claim Jesus was fathered without a single drop of sperm. There wasn't even a penis involved. It's a religion without penetration...

I've yet to meet a Christian that can actually explain something of the Christian religion....

Christians preach about it because they're prudes with smelly cunts. I say do who you want to do when you want to do them. Waiting until marriage to have sex is like being a blind man picking out your favorite porn....it's probably going to suck and you're stuck with it.

Many of the prohibitions against sexual intercourse came about because manipulators who were hell bent on trying to promote their political agenda by 'selling' it as a spiritual one! Most bible prohibitions against 'sexual immorality' had nothing to do with consentual sex betweeen individuals, but sexual debauchery, torture and so forth. You have to give him time to consult with the Reverend, check the old testament, the new testament, light a candle and pray about it and wait for a sign from God.

A lot of people in here seem to not really care what God says... so what I ask is, what do you live for? Who do you live for? Whats keeping you alive? Respect others.

It's hard to say wher the whole chastity/celebacy idea in chrisitanity came from.

We do know that celebacy was decreed cananol law for bishops and priests at the council of elvira in 300AD, 25 years proir to the Niceene council. Where it came from? Who knows.

Ironically it may well be a hold over from some of the pagan cults that catholisism adopted so many of their other traditions from.

We also know that alot of the early greek philosophers were strong advicates of celebacy which may explain it to some extent since the early church fathers were heavely influenced by them.

Specifically "... and wait for a sign from God."

You mean ... wait forever? :p

No, just wait for something pertinent to happen and then CLAIM it to be a sign from God.

    You know, like always!

Of course there's always the theory that the early church fathers couldn't get laid so they didn't want anybody else to.

You can check out the canons of Elvira by going to: http://faculty.cua.edu/pennington/Canon%20Law/ElviraCanons.htm

I've never heard of this council/meeting before. Thanks for the heads-up.

I assume that you are referring to the Gnostics (Or not?), who were notorious for preaching celibacy.

    Thanks for the link.

Your right about the Gnostics but I was thinking more along the lines of the preisteses of Athena and Artimis in Greece and the Vestal Virgins and some of the Mystery cults of ancient Rome.

    Here's a link that goes into it breifly;

I agree that the christian way is just to protect from the taking advantage of the opportunity to have sex and what god said to abraham was to spread his seed like have babies so i think that sex is most importantly for that , I just think christian don't want it to be taking lightly the way it is secularly.

Don't get suckered in by fundamentalist and "orthodox" types that have manipulated scripture to mean what they want it to mean! These people are usually very short-sighted and do not understand the meaning behind the message!

Recently, I've discovered a few other links which also defend more reasonable, liberal approaches to christianity.
