You know every ideaology has its crazy nut cases....Atheism is no diffrent...Do any of ya'll find it funny that some athiest can be offened by a god they don't belive in? I don't belive in Unicorns but if someone more or less worships the magical world of Unicorns I by no means want to ban the word Unicorn in our school systme.... Just seeing what some of ya'll have to say on it.
It might bother some people to see a dead guy nailed to some pieces of wood with blood and gore coming out of his face and body. Doesn't bother me though.
Kris Cause most people are ignorant of the fact that theologians of both Christianity and Islam admit that both religions worship the same god. And occam says it's OK to say the word god in schools. It is not however OK to show children anything but an impartial attitude to any religious belief. The concept of religion can easily be taught just like 'political concepts' Schools teach of parlimentary democracy, communism, monarchies exct in an impartial academic way. The same can be done with religion. Theres no problem saying that billions believe in a god. They do. However, if one religion is held above others as 'truth' Then education ends, and conditioning begins. Occam PS. Much like teaching kids about the idea of unicorns. It's fine to do that. But what school teaches kids that unicorns are real? None. Why?
I agree with you. Though my main point is someone getting "offended" by something they don't even belive in. btw I like your sig :-D
Consider these four things that could be said: 1. "I believe in and pray to the unicorn queen!" 2. "I believe in and pray to the unicorn queen, and if you don't beleive in the unicorn queen, you're a dumbass!" 3. "I believe in and pray to God!" 4. "I believe in and pray to God, and if you don't, then you are a sinner, who will burn in the most unfathomably painful Hell for all eternity, who will never know peace or goodness, who is stupid beyond belief, who worships Satan and hates all that is good, and should perish from this Earth and burn in the Hell you belong in!!" Statements 1 and 3, I have absolutely no problem with, and there are a few choice Christians, Muslims, Jews, and pagans that I have been able to have a great, interesting, and friendly conversation with, about God, because they did not take the stances of statements 2 and 4. But the second you go to statements 2 and 4, as many, many people have a tendency to do ... It is no longer the idea of something that you don't believe in that is offensive. It is the followers of that thing which you don't believe in, who are offensive.
Religon would be nice...If it wasn't for people lol. I understand that the Christian Religon has done alot to earn their reputation... But most times an athiest comes off as Anti-Christian not really anti-thieist... Mostly I don't mind athiesm because its not my choice... It just buggs me sometimes when an "athiest" only focus on one particular religion...Just like when Churches focous on one bible verse taken out of context.
These atheists aren't offended by god. They are offended by christians. And you are gving us a good example of why many are. You claim atheists are trying to ban the word "god" in the school system just because they don't want thier kids to be forced to pray at school ceremonies, in classrooms, and the like - you wouldn't want your kids to be forced to take part in satanic rituals or risk detention, now would you? No one is trying to ban the word "god" and your little spin on the reality of the situation is offensive to people who's concerns about their rights and their children's rights deserve to be taken seriously.
how you manged to take what I said and twist it so bad...I don't know... First off where did i mention school? or prayer? or any of what you are ranting about... I simply asked what they think about the over zealous athiest that are out there...I never bought any religion into this simply the word "God" something they say they don't belive in....
Your first post brings up both religion and the school system. You said: Do I have to say more than that? No atheist is offended by god because they don't believe in god. You wern't puting any logical thought into the comment, you were trying to dig at atheists that stand up for their rights in a christian dominated society, like those that don't want their young children indocrinated with christianity in the public school system. And yes, YOU brought up the whole school system thing. You think an overzealous atheist is someone that confronts a school system that forces kids to participate in prayer. It's preferable over the overzealous christian that crusades to get spongebob squarepants off the air...better than them crusading for our heads I guess.... And no, we aren't offended by god, just ignorance, intolerance, and being pressured to practice anyone's religion.
Kris Yeh..more of a personal mystery to occam as he cant imagine how anyone could be 'offended' by a concept at all. Sonds more like people wanting to be offended so they can air their pet opinions. Taught self to make animated gifs from dvd movies. TDTESS being one of all time topten movies Gort. Klatu verada nikto. Use Gort as avatar/nic on several other sites Occam
That was a simple example and the one we are most farmilar with. I did not however mean for it to take control of the thread. YOU are giving to much tought to the example. I'm sorry it wasn't any more clear. I Belive that All should be allowed to pray or none should be allowed to pray in school. So don't pull that on me. You as it seems are trying to fight fire with fire... I simply think an over zealous athiest is one that is closed minded enough to always focous on one singular religion and must resort to calling it "ignorant" etc etc because they don't belive it. You have nothing against the religion you have something against the people...That I belive is wrong. Its their personal freedom to be as "ignorant" as they want...Just like its your freedom to flame and take some silly post that has yet to become hostel and throw in slander and other junk to prove your point...
its simply a thought in someones mind...Sometimes people act crazy and get a particular thought a bad rep...Its not so much hating the idea as it is the people I suppose TDTESS is awesome !!!!!
Well lets get back on track Yes...Actually occam thinks many athiests call them selves such in a personal 'offencive' against a particular religion. Reactionaries Being 'offended' is used so they seem like a victim of social injustice. They are helpless victims of 'philosophical harassment' Occam
There is a really good movie called "The Beliver" you have have seen it. Its about a Jew who becomes a Neo Nazi... Near the end of the film he goes "Jews want to be hated, the strive off of it." Now I don't know if Jews in fact feed off of "being attacked" but it does bring a good point. People want the attention...Sometimes to get attention you must be "attacked"...Atheist, Christians, and everyother religion has this group of people. I do tend to think that people focous on the Judeo/Christian/Islamic God more then they do others since the New Age movement. I also think true Athiest get slack to because of the "Attack Attention" syndrome....Maybe I should patten that?
im an atheist and dont believe myself to be a victim of philosophical harrasment. i also dont target christianity and am not an atheist because of it but am one because of a few years worth of thinking about things. i just wanted to show that not all atheists are the way you guys described. and to the original poster, the reason some atheists get offended by the idea of god in things like the pledge is just because they dont want it in a school environment. imagine if instead of "under god" it said "under satan". now i dont care about it personally, but i can see why someone might
Smurfing Check occams posts...does not say 'all athiests' in any of them. You seem pretty impartial.. a stable place to be in the swirling mass of emotion based rubbish most people call 'rational thought'. [but is'nt] [And occam knows well about 'athiests' cause he was one at your age. Untill many decades of thought and gained understanding showed emphatically that you can 'say' there is no god. You can believe it. But it is logically beyond the abillities of human beings to prove it. A position much the mirror to being a theist. [one is a thiest or an athiest because one 'wants' to be, not because of any conclusive evidence one way or the other] Thats why occam is an agnostic. [agnostic= insufficient data]] Occam
Kris No,, but will hunt it down, theres probably a torrent of it i can dl [Torrents are great. occam dl's 20 gig a month of movies alone] Have been scouring the net for all the old sf movies, picked up 'when worlds collide' and 'quiet earth' last week.. both classics Occam
You gotta take 'The Beliver' with a grain of salt on some things...However it brings up alot of great points. I like sf and horror....specialy some splatterpunk when I can find it....
