I don't know what I would do if that were my child... disown him maybe. At 12 yrs old, if you don't know that it is not morally, or socially acceptable to stick your previously chewed wad of gum on a painting hanging in a museum, well... you deserve a spanking for your stupidity. What a moron. Granted, I probably feel more strongly about Art than most parents.

I do believe that twelve year olds should be held responsible for their actions. They are well old enough know the difference between right and wrong. He deserves punishment. However, even though he was old enough to know that was wrong, he probably was not thinking how wrong it was. I doubt he was going out of his way to ruin the painting. He probably thought that the gum would stick to the painting, dry, and the janitor would scrape it off. This just doesn't strike me as a malicious act, just an incredibly foolish one.

just being stupid and trying to be a badass, that's all. i've got three brother, allof whom i adore, but the things i saw them do when they were bored or cranky would turn MY hair grey, but they all grew out of it. so many people wanna treat youngsters like they're adults, but their not. their impulse control mechanism isn't fully formed yet. punishment IS a part of teaching them this, but don't punish him like you would an adult.

    Wow. What a little dumbass.

The painting should have been protected, but the boy should definitely know better. He'd respect it more if it were a Playstation 3, you know?

Now we're probably all going to have to have our mouths searched as we enter museums just like we have to take our shoes off at airports. :p Thanks, kid.

Has no one ever been to a museum? There should be guards around, but you can basically walk right up to any painting and get as close as you want without touching it. This has been the case at every museum I have ever been to. It sounds like a lot, but 1.5 million is not that much for museum quality art work. At 12 he definitely should have known better and been better supervised.
