Could anyone tell me anything about Chena Hot Springs. Me and my boyfriend have been thinking about going up there and working this winter (yes I know it's cold but it would be an interesting experience). I would like to know what kind of things there is to do and how Chena Hot Springs treat their employees. Could you also tell me if Alaska is a liberal or conservative state.
Hey---I know this post is pretty old, but I just saw it. I live north of Fairbanks and do communications work in Chena Hot Springs. Skip Chena Hot Springs. They piss test, no alcohol on premises for employees, they reserve the right to search your room at any time, etc.. They have a high turn over of personel and the employees never seem too happy. Try someplace else.....like Coldfoot Camp north of here. They are much nicer to work for.
No doubt it is a beautiful place. I love to spend the day working out there. I was just there yesterday. I always manage to screw off for at least an hour on the west fork of the Chena river every trip. Take some time to smoke a bowl and skinny dip.......and mind you "dip" is the right word, that water is cold.
believe me, i know how cold the water is, even when its 85 degrees. I got soaked while white water rafting in the nennana river when it was actually hot outside. But that water, i think its a glacier run off, was freezing
I am planning a trip to Alaska. I dig astronomy and want to see the northern lights from Fairbanks. They say you can see the aurora 240 nights out of the year from Fairbanks. Alaska http://jimcolyer.com/papers/entry?id=11 Astronomy http://jimcolyer.com/papers/entry?id=2
Where are you up here? And.....if you dread winter so much maybe you live in the wrong place. I love winter......the northern lights when the weather is dead calm, clear and 40 below...paradise
I moved up here from Georgia through the military just a little under a year ago. I live on Ft Wainwright. You're right though. All winter long it's like a huge light show in the sky.
No doubt.....and yeah winter can be hard. I work outside all year...I don't wear anything but Carharts and bunny boots for half the year, but I still enjoy winter. It really makes you appreciate the sun and 78 degrees we have right now. Ever make it to Ivory Jacks? I can walk there from our 10 acres. Hey...DBW it is amazing. Doesn't your father live out CHSR?
My father lives about a half hour away from the actual hot springs, On roberts roost road. I can't wait for my next venture out there
So, Lodog; FreeinAlaska, And Anyone Else Out There...Any Suggestions On Things To Do/See While I'm In The State? I'd Really Appreciate The Help...I Really Don't Want To Miss Anything While I'm There : ) Thx...
Hey Dark Kamui---There is so much to see and do. The coastal areas are really cool, you can fish, check out a glacier, canoe or sea kayak. I am really fond of the interior from Fairbanks north to the Brooks Range. Pack your bag and head up the Dalton Highway and truly see vastness. There are lakes, creeks and hot springs.....hot springs that you have to hike to, with no one who may be concerned with ones lack of clothing or choice of smoking material. The further north the more extreme the midnight sun, or noon day darkness, is. Take a dog sled ride at 30 below......close a local bar down with the sun shining at 3:00 AM......befriend some locals....take a hike.....check out the native culture....... Are you planning a trip soon?
4~5 Months Down The Road (Fingers Crossed).......And Thanks For The Ideas! : ) I'll Go Fishing For Sure, And Packing Through, And I Would Love To See The Northern Lights--Got The Time To Do It All
How is the living up there. I mean is there work for the masses or do you really have to look for that perfect job. Also. In these places that are amazing and worth the trip, how could one decide on living in this beauty for an extended length of time. I may be a dreamer, but it was always my life goal to move to alaska and be one with nature and all that good stuff But I never took the time to really investigate. How would one plan their move to alaska.
