The two dune trilogies are amazing. The 6 books span over millennia and the only reoccurring character is Duncan Idaho, who died in the first book and was brought back to life in book 2. So you can see how whacked out they are.

Frank Herbert’s son has writen prequels with Kevin Anderson, they aren’t as good but if you are as into dune as me its good to know the events leading up to book 1.

Also did you know Frank Herbert started "Earth Day" and was a dedicated environmentalist?

oh man... i've been reading that thing for like, ever. seriously, i'm approching a year. lol... but it's really fucking good. i love Dune and frank herbert. my favorate thing about Dune is reading everyone's thoughts. it's really interesting to know what they're thinking. they're always thinking complicated, interesting things. (...bare with me, i'm kinda drunk)

i've been falling asleep to the first Dune movie for about 2 or 3 weeks though. last night, i finally finished it... since it's 4(+) hours long... by finished, i mean picking up at the end of shit i've seen a million times and then watching to the end.

    rofl

    i suck.

I think one of the reasons the dune series is so immersive is the fact that he got the idea for the 1st book about 10 years before it was finally finished. When he first started out writing he was a journalist and did a story on desert regions and got the idea of a planet totally covered in desert. So for nearly 10 years he had the idea floating around and kept doing research for the books on different subjects such as desert dwelling cultures. The fremen were losely based on the Arab people, even some of the laungage overlaps, like the word Jihad.

As you can tell they are my favorite books ;)

    oh god dude...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Herbert

ok... granted.. i was fucking stoned... but i picked up one of his other books and started reading, randomly, and was totally tripped out and swept away to a completely different world and when it was time to go, i desperatly wanted to go back... it was realllly weird...

but i've been working on so many books that i haven't decided to pick one up. i highly ([IMG]) recomend it though.

GBDaisy: check out his "void ship" series. Its way wicked... maybe not as good as Dune, but still pretty fantastic! Bill Ransom is a co-author on most of them, but its Herbert at heart.

p.s. I am getting the shirt for my birthday from my hubby! Very excited!

oh man... dune... i think i need to go re-read. it's been a few years... i must say though, the movie(s) really don't do it for me.

There are exactly two books I've ever read cover-to-cover in a single session in my life. Dune was one, and the one I will reread. It was like it became a part of my hand for almost 24 hours. It was so far above the endless sequels, I have to think of it as standing alone. One of the finest sci-fi books of all time, and one of the most engrossing.

As for Herbert's other works, a number of his fell flat for me, but his novels about the ConSentiency are excellent: Whipping Star and The Dosadi Experiment. Both excellent and intelligent works with a couple of great central characters.

I've read all of the Dune books including Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson's prelude to Dune and legends of Dune.

Can't wait to read Hunters of Dune which continues Frank Herbert's vision of his 7th and final book of the Dune Chronicles :)

my own feelings on dune are this

frank herbet had a dream about this desert planet and wrote a book about it.

the film is just as good because the director has put his own spin on the book, making it a masterpiece in its own right.

It's probebly my favourite science fiction book series. I haven't read any of them since I was 9 or so, but I am sure that I could enjoy them if I pick them up again.

dune is one of those books i could read over and over

for me the sign of great literature is that i can open the book at any page and still not be able to put the book down! there is a rythm to the writing.
