Just wondering why there wasn't already a forum on Transcendentalism? Or is it maybe already located somewhere else? I'd like to see what people around here think of it, and get some ideas and discussion out of people, regarding it.
It was a philosophy that was created in the 1830's. It's a non-religous belief that there is a spirit or "great divinity" present inside everyone and everything. Some of it's followers included Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Margaret Fuller, amongst other writers of the time. http://www.vcu.edu/engweb/transcendentalism/ http://www.wsu.edu/~campbelld/amlit/amtrans.htm
yeah man, the mystics forum would probably be close enough. last night, a mystic who's teaching me said that there are so many religions in this life that contain half truth- or jusstt enough to get you in and keep ya rolling. maybe you'd say every religion is just the same, --and then we have our own subjective current assumptions and worldview this transendentalism sounds like so many other things- things that might even be spelt God, or energy - whatever it is that's connecting us all- great spirit and i see where you're reaching out to, definitely check out the mystics thread man =) and if you ever wanna chat, message me on aim! my screenname is youarenotgoliath ~peace man
Thanks guys. I saw the Mystics forum, but just wondered if there was/why there wasn't one for this. But yeah, I'll head over there instead. Magnanimity Man, I'd love to chat sometime, but I no longer have AIM. Do you have MSN, by chance? P.S. I do believe that yes, many religions and doctrines are all essentially the same. Transcendentalism has a few beliefs, however, that I haven't seen present in alot of other "systems". It seems to be a system without a system, per se. It emphasizes on the power of individuality, and each person's perception and belief. This site give and overview that explains it better than I can: http://www.csustan.edu/english/reuben/pal/chap4/4intro.html
yeah, but those famous transcendentalists went on to join the Unitarian church, didn't they? Even Emerson and Thoreau kept learning new things and changing their minds. Eventually they parted ways with the Unitarians, too.. That would be unitarianism. Universalism is the idea that there is universal salvation for everyone, regardless of what religion you follow. Not even most people who attend the UU church believe in unitarianism or universalism anymore. try www.uua.org for more information.
mamaboogie, you're daughter in your signature, hugging her teddy, is the most beautiful little girlie =P sooo precious, and soooooo ALIVE! =))) i'm sorry bloom, i dont got msn =(( i live on a university now, and the only computer i can use are these campus computers, which dont let us install anything =\ i go on that downloadless aim that you can get through aim.com =P but god knows we'll be in touch through hipforums =)) annnd if you ever get aim again~~~~ =) much much love man, and muchhh Peace
Well, that's cool dude. There's also a version of MSN that you don't have to download. Go to http://webmessenger.msn.com, you do have to sign up for a hotmail address though. Mamaboogie, yeah you're right, they all did kind of disperse from the idea, after awhile. Although, I thought it was the Unitarian church that they were sperating from, in the first place? I'm still pretty interested in the idea they had, though. Along with the reverance of nature, and their ideas on "spirit", they also allowed a great deal of indivdualism, in the sense that no two transcendentalists necessarily believed the same exact thing. It was a philosophy that was a bit more loose in it's ideals and didn't force any rules or guidelines, if I'm not mistaken.
maybe so... it's been a long time, and I was taught about Emerson and Thoreau by Unitarians (who liked to forget to mention that part where they turned away from unitarianism for some very valid reasons), so even if I do remember correctly, I might have been misinformed in the first place - LOL
Hahaha, awww that's okay. I'm still pretty new to the idea, so I could be wrong also. P.S. I agree with Magnanimity Man (I always misspell that, I think) that your children are absolutely adorable! And I love your daughters dreads. Toooo cute.
my guess would be the same reason there isn't one on Baha'u'llah or Sikh's or zoroastrianism. which is to say i'm guessing there arn't that many Baha'i's or Sikh's, zoroastrians, jainists, ... using this forum. (or why the christianity sub forum isn't subtitled: "the ultimate cult", which would be more consistent with the kind of subtitles the other subforms have then the one which it does) =^^= .../\...
