I'm a fairly active camper, and I've been contemplating some longer thru-hikes of trails, and I wondered if anyone had any experience with taking weed along on long treks. I've taken small amounts on shorter trips, but I've never actually had any experience with rangers during that time. Anyone ever been hassled? Succeed?

I personally can't stand camping (no electricity, a/c, tv...), but I've been on long camping trips with my family before, and one time, when we went on a one-month hike/camping trip, I brought 5 ounces with me. We encountered a few rangers in that month, and one of the times I was very, very, very high, and they still didn't do anything. I guess it just depends on where you go; some places are more sucky than others...

Getting high while camping is my 2nd favorite thing of all time.
Out in the beauty of nature, exploring/seeing new things, enjoying being out of the pollution and noise and stress of the city.
I was also a ranger for decades.
We don't hassle people for smoking pot in my neck of the woods at least (mountains in SoCal). We're not cops (although there are ranger cops).
Plus, we wear uniforms and don't sneak up on people so you can spot us easily.
And a LOT of rangers get high I'd say something like 50%--60%.

Except for boy scouts, people you meet backpacking are usually pro-pot. They may not smoke themselves but don't mind if other people do.
Getting drunk around the campfire is mega-fun too.

Combining camping with growing pot is the ultimate.

NOTE: There are 2 kinds of rangers. There are the U.S. Forest Service rangers, and then there are the National Park Service rangers.
The NPS rangers are the guys who wear those "Smoky Bear"-type hats, and they're mostly assholes. Avoid them.

camping is awesome, but ive not been on a camp since i started smokin pot. ive been on camps for the duke of edinborough scheme and for scouts and some other occasions. i have to say, camping with your friends is so fun. the walking could be a bitch if youre stoned, unless you like, brought along some amphetamines as well. i love the way on camps you dont have any electrical stuff. i only like electrical stuff because if i didnt use it but still lived in teh city, id be wasting all the things i could have. but when there is no electricity around, well i find i barely think about television or computer or electric cooking appliances at all, like i dont even consider them, instead you gotta consider your practical options, and i love that way of living. but its gotta be on a camp or somethin, not all teh time, you cant achieve much in terms of learning/information and communication when you dont use the powers of electricity, and as for life goals, i see these more important. but like once a year camping trip would be teh ideal retreat. none of that staying at beach resorts crap.

and i lovvveee navigating through the bush. australian flora can be spikey, brittle, and lashing. but the landscape, of ancient valleys, heaps of rocks, lots of sun-cover, red-dirt roads, and usually many different sub-ecosystems, and constant humming of insects and birds in the summer, they all make up for the dangers of the wildlife. watch out for drop-bears!

cooking on a camp fire or camping stove is an event in itself, but cleaning up can be a bitch

    damn i must love camping

Once you're out in the woods I dont think any ranger is going to bother searching your stuff. I dont even know if they have a legal right to, but even so like rangerdanger says, no one really cares out in the woods. Just carry out what you carry in and dont feed the wild life and you'll be left in peace!

oh yeh i forgot about that, why the hell would you be afraid of rangers getting you for pot? a) they know youre not gonna disturb the peace b) they know its only for your personal use and could only carry a certain quantity c) what are they gonna do if they bust you? take you all the way back to basecamp and organise for the cops to arrive and wait all that time, sitting around instead of rangering through teh forrest?

id think most people who become rangers enjoy their care about teh comfort of the wild more than crackin down on legal turf

I've wanted to go to Australia for a long time, namely Coober Pedy. I saw this show on national geographic, i think, where there are underground houses there [that still get electricity] and it only costs 80 bucks a year to live there...sounds good to me....

    i like what danger postd

i went camping a few months ago and got in trouble with the rangers, but i do believe they were national park rangers.
they gave us mips as well as weed charges, but since they were federal rangers it was just a buttload of money instead of any jail time/court dates/etc.

i also wasnt going straight into the woods, we stayed at a campsite. it was fun as hell though!!!!i strongly recommend you go camping.

next time i go i'll go backpacking for sure, fuck that campsiteshit :)
