well if you have dogs comb their fur and spread it around ....that can up as for bugs chili peppers juiced up in a blender and strained then sprayed can repel insects.....

yeah companion planting rocks! research herbs that act as pest host/ or pest deterrant plants for your veggies. off the top of my head....catnip should be planted with peppers & eggplants. worked for me last year
depends on what animals and bugs you are trying to keep away, and what plants you are growing. I have noticed, over the years, that my organic garden is bothered much less by pests than my neighbors chemical wastelands. Once you start using chemicals, your garden grows dependent on those things. Beneficial insects are a gardener's best friend. Well, that and compost.
