on ebay, this seller seems like they'll be seeling more than one copy: Item number: 7011540055 another item they sold: Item number: 7011540055 this person looks like they just got an ebay account do to this. is this enough info to report them to ebay? if so then lets get a few other people to do the same and join in on the brigade to protect Lauren's book and stop greedy people from selling dozens of books for 50 bucks each.
Well, if the book is plagiarized, then there could be something to do. But I think that ebay wouldn't be the first place to report it. I guess. If it is plagiarized word for word, then yeah it should be removed. IF she has it copywritten. If she doen't then there's probably not much of a fight. Another thing about copywrite laws is that if the book has the same information, but reworded, it's not a plagiarized book. That would explain why there are so many "self-help" and "get thin in one week books". They all contain the sae info in them, just reworded. I hope she did get it copywritten. If not, she's out of luck. Another thing too is, if the book is hers (as in a copy of her published book), then there is no law stating that soemone can resell it for profit. That's how things are. Many people tried selling action figures they modified and ebay pulled them. the courts later said that after the consumer has purchased the item, he or she can modify it how they want and the manufacturer, artist, writter, or what-not has no say so about the modification and customizing a product after it has been sold to an individual. So in other terms, if I sell a painting that too me X-amount of hours of make, sold it for the ammount i wanted to sell it for, and the buyer burns it on purpose. Then that's his problem, he's out of the money he paid me for my art. That also goes to cars, we modify them and then resale them. No law in that. Also, if this book is a photo-copy of her's (an unauthorized copy) then Yes there is a problem with they are doing. Bottom line, is if this person is reselling her product for a profit, then there is no problem. If you have a problem with that, don't buy it and make others aware of the outrageous price they want for it. I do agree with you that it's ignorant that someone is selling a product for an outrageous price that you could get second or third or fourth hand from someone, but if you are dumb enough to by the book for an unreasonable ammount, then a fool has been soon parted from his or her money.
Well, meffordhead or whatever the heck his name is, isn't saying he wrote the book. He mentions Lauren's name. So, he's not plagiarizing her. He's not taking credit for her work. He's just reselling his copy, which is what e-bay is for. And both of those item numbers you posted are identical. That's one item. He started the bidding at $23.00. I can't remember what copies go for directly from her, so I don't know why he started it at $23.00. Nobody bid on it yet, anyway. Although you reminded me that I want a copy, so by posting this you did some advertising for her! (Does she still even have copies of it?) So, no plagiarism is happening. Don't panic. Once he bought the book from her it became his property. And things are copyrighted, not copywritten.
Well, just be careful, because there are people out there reprinting the book and selling them. I have an original copy of Lauren Clay's book and a lot of the copies I have seen on EBAY and other auction sites are not the real thing, they are copies. That is illegal.
sorry, the other item number was 7007184760 what i meant was that the seller isn't plagarizing but making illegal copies of a copyrighted book, as in going to Kinkos and making new ones and selling it for profit. this is what it says on the authors website: Because this book has a copyright and an ISDN issued by the Library of Congress, any reproduction of this book, including the text or illustrations without permission from the author, Lauren Clay is a federal offense and is punishable by law. http://www.geocities.com/poohdoh/book.html
well i'm sorry i did "advertising" but the book will most likely go for around 50 bucks, like they usually do on ebay. check the sellers history. theres been a big problem on ebay with people making tons of copies of the book and selling them, but most of them have gotten pulled and fined.
Its basic economics... supply and demand. There is a demand, but no supply, ergo the wrong people are making money filling the demand that Lauren, the author, isn't bothering with. It's wrong to sell the book like this person is doing... don't get me wrong. But, its a problem easily solved if she would just make more copies. People would buy legit copies if they were available.
That's different. That totally sucks. I thought he was just reselling a copy that he bought, but if he's making copies, then that's totally fucked up.
i know that its supply and demand, but people are selling copies cuz they know they'll profit. when an author stops publishing a book it doesnt mean i have the right to go copy it and sell myself. it just becomes a rare item. if someone really wanted the books out there that bad, maybe they'd ask her permission to copy and sell them and give her some profit or something
damnit she listed ANOTHER ebay item 7013750028 either she has to be copying or she bought em wholesale off Lauren...but i kinda doubt that.
I know this may not benefit the thread in any way, but wouldn't it be funny if it was actually Lauren?
Just out of curiousity gruvenmama, do you personally know Lauren? I'm just curious why you're so involved in it when Lauren should be the one doing the enforcing. It's very kind of you to be watching out for her book like this.
i have talked to her online and there are a few other sewing girls like me looking out for her stuff. i'm sure she has a busy life and she's not an ebay person, so i doubt she monitors ebay or knows about it. i just hate to be seeing people making all of the profits that should be going to her if she was selling it, and it is also a copyright violation. such an insult to an original book that had so much time put into it, and people shouldn't be able to get away with making copies of it like its a handbill or something
7014871951 and another. the more people we get to contact ebay, the sooner the seller will be stopped
Look, enforcement of copyright (and that''s what this issue is) is up to the OWNER of the copyright and preferably a great arts/ creative folks lawyer. If one is not the owner, there is no legal ground to stand on. Why not try to get a mailing addy from the seller and give it to her? If someone does not work to protect their intellectual property, that is their loss. Bayer, for example. aspirin and heroin were their marks. And once someone owns a piece of intellectual property, such as a book, or even a dres sby the fine sewing mamas of this board, the OWNER can resell it at a profit. like wholesaling. I own several pieces of original art by a variety of people. I can sell them. I own the actual objects. I cannot make a calendar of them and sell copies. I own commercial CDs. I can resell them. and overreporting tends to make bureaucratic corporations slow down response time, on worse, stop taking your complaints seriously or investigating them.
