this may seem like a stupid question but i just wanted to know whow many of you got your dreads done somewhere like a hair salon. and if you did, did you get it done at a black salon?
not me and im sure it doesnt matter what colour the salon is. no seriously. "black" or "white" makes no difference, salon dreads are shit no matter hwat hair type you have. all dreadlocks are is knotted hair. its very simple really.
I've known one girl get it done at a Salon, all they did was twist and stick on a load of products, they looked like 'perfect' dreads to her for a week, then she washed her hair and it all came unraveled. My boyfriends parents once asked an apparently well respected local 'loctician' how much it would be to do his hair as he's wanted dreads since he was little and they didn't know how to do them. Turns out she was just going to glue his hair together in the shape of locks. I don't mind how people do their hair but there is no point going to a salon, as fleassy said, dreads are knotted hair. Your hair will do that given time anyway, if you want them more uniformed then give them a helping hand (some maintenance, natural dread products, alot of patience and twisting and sectioning). Also I didn't know black or white salons existed? I know different hair types need different maintenance but I've never seen any segregation like that.
I went to a "black" salon after I had dreads already, my husband did mine, and asked for tips and such and even tho my hair was locked up the woman told me that I can't have dreads because only people with nappy hair can have dreads, and also acted as if white people can't have dreads.. Wonder how that is when it was already locking up... She was a major bitch and they started speaking to each other in the shop in another language (don't know which one) about me and laughing so I just walked out....................................... the next one I went to there were two older jamaican ladies with gorgeous hair, one had dreads that where grey almost past her butt, she was sooo nice and told us exactly what to do and it worked for me..... I am so glad we found her cuz she sells all natural hair care products too
bahahahaaa you tell it fleassy! salon dreads typically look like crap. dreads are different from any other hairstyle because they are an investment of time, pure and simple. if you give them enough time, they will be the phattest, sweetest locks you can imagine, regardless of what you did when you first put them in, or how you got them. if you don't want to go totally natural (ie: stop brushing, and conditioning your hair in favour of letting it lock completely on its own, in its own way) you can try back combing, or twist-n-ripping... if you go for either of those methods, i'd recommend asking a friend who doesn't mind spending several hours with you, who you don't mind causing you a lot of pain. because it's pretty hard to get all all your hair yourself, and your arms will get wicked tired that way.
I do not think that the poster meant any racial malice. There are salons that deal primarily with black hair and primarily with white/Asian hair and there is nothing wrong with that. It isn't like they refuse to do any type of hair, it just depends on where you live and who the majority of your clientele is. I got my dreads started in a primarily "black" salon. I do not see a problem with this and the woman who started them didn't treat me any different or have hesitation about my hair, even though she had never worked with white hair for dreads. Any hair type can dread. I have very straight Caucasian hair and I have dreads. Beware, many salons do hair in a style that is meant to be washed out. If someone starts twisting your hair and using gel, have them stop. If you are having dreads started, they have to be backcombing! No twists like that. As the stories above showed, this washes right out and just looks like locks for a while. Huge money waster. Good luck. Ask around. Make sure they have experience in *your* hair type and don't let someone tell you your hair can't dread.
I don't think anyone's suggesting racism or anything, I genuinely wasn't aware there were two different types of salon for different hair types. Most hair salons round here deal with all hair types and have specific stylists that specialise in afro carribean hair types or caucasion or any type at all really.
i didnt many anything racist about what i said. I live in the south and here there are very specific salons. one is even call African Hair. I just want to explore all my options before i start my dreads.
