I am curious what percentage of Americans are against the war in Iraq. Does anybody know if there are poll numbers or any stats on this?? Also, what percent of Americans were against Vietnam?? How do the numbers compare between the two wars??? I know these are a lot of questions to ask but it would be interesting to know.
I try to look at all polls cautiously, but I'm sure if you look on the 'net, you can find many polls on Americans' opinions about the war in Iraq. From what I've heard (folks, if I'm wrong, please tell me so), the majority of Americans polled in the 60s supported the Vietnam War. This is my personal opinion, but I do think anti-war Americans are a minority, but I'm not sure by how much.
The problem with ccomparing polls is that most media oulets have an agenda to portray. That means they may have 10 or 15 polls to pick from and they show the poll that shows the slant they want us to see, or they feel most people will agree with. Ratings is the biggest motivation of what american news shows you, it's kind of sad. If you watch news from other countries you can see the difference. As for oppostion I think that age difference makes the biggest gap in who agrees and who doesn't. (many younger opposing, more, but not all older agreeing or indifferent)I believe it was the same in vietnam, but I'm not 100% sure. The views from that era have been skewed by, realising in later years the immoral grounds of the war by a majority of americans. It became sort of cool to disagree with it.
most of the people i know are very cautiously pro-war. these are people of all spectrums. most of the support i hear is of the "get them before they get us" variety, which is sad but understandable.
Most Americans probably don't have strong feelings either way. Since none (or very few) of us care about the news or who gets elected, my guess would be that most of us don't care about the war either. That's the way it is with a lot of people I know.
Pollingreport gives the results of many different polling groups. http://www.pollingreport.com/iraq.htm
One thing you need to consider is the timing of the polls. Of the people polled in the mid-60s, most supported the war in Vietnam, while polls taken in the early 70s showed the majority were against it. The war dragging on for so many years had soured public opinion. As for polls today, most had supported invading Iraq when we were convinced there must be WMDs and an Al Qaeda connection, while fewer support the war now that we know they apparently didn't exist in the first place.
yeah... i think apathy is the most prevalent emotion concerning the wasr... unless it affects you immediately. 200th post!
I agree with those who say that the primary feeling on the attacks in Iraq is apathy. In my experience, almost everyone I've talked to - conservative, liberal, anarchist, independent, whatever - KNOWS that the Iraq invasion was bullshit, KNOWS that Iraq was never a threat to anyone (least of all the US), and KNOWS that the US really invaded to get control of the oil. What is also a common thread, however (except perhaps with the anarchist community) is the general sense of "nothing we can do" and no real desire to take any action to stop the government from its warmongering. Look - Americans are obese, undereducated, in massive debt, working at jobs they hate, addicted to drugs and alcohol, and medicated for all of it with psychotropics that do god-knows-what to the ability to critically think. They don't have the time or inclination to worry about some foreigners being slaughtered. They don't even REALLY have the time to worry about American soldiers being slaughtered. So long as they have mindless entertainment, an endless array of plastic crap to buy, a new SUV at 0% financing, their pathetic addictions, cheap pornography, and bad food, they'll keep their mouths shut. Sad but true.

Sad but true. thats a pretty harsh generalization of over 300 million people. I think most people are against the war, of course i am an American so what do i know
Reallly, I don't personally know anyone like that and I know a lot of people. I've seen people that are probably like that........
ay, I believe it, I have an aversion to the suburbs that may well explain my lack on contact with these people.
Willow, every post you make carries the same message, regardless of the topic. How about coming up with something different for a change?
