I got my nose pierced this weekend Yay! Hardly any pain, but i was so nervous I didn't ask the gauge of the jewelry and now I have no idea. I have a screw in now, but I want a hoop eventually it is really tiny I think. so maybe a 20? The needle looked bigger than the piercing. I have no idea. Help me?
the needle is always bigger than the jewelry, i dont know what gage it would be number wise but i do believe that they just call it a starter. that's what they called it when i got mine done.
I guess the smartest and easiest way to tackle this problem would be to go back to the person that pierced your nose.
actually, the jewelry should never smaller than the needle. its really uncommon to see 20ga jewelry. 18ga would make sense though. if they used a 16ga needle, with 18ga jewelry, chances are you wont have a problem, but dont get pierced by them again.
oh yeah, and thats not a silly question at all. they very well may have used a larger needle than the jewelry. should they have? absolutely not. they probably did it because they were out of the same size, or they cant get the transfer. which would make them a awful piercer.
I am not saying that he did, I know that he is not a bad piercer. I looked at it very briefly before he pierced me so it very well could have looked big because i was nervous. The screw actually was more uncomfortable than the needle. I think I will just go with the smaller the better when I buy some new jewelry.
just keep in mind smaller rips easier too. if hes a good artist, then he definitely did not use two different sizes.
My piercer used a slightly larger needle. He isn't a bad piercer....he's real good at what he does. In fact, most of the piercers I know use a slightly larger needle than the jewelry he or she uses.
It is weird how no one can seem to come up with a standard for piercing and tattoos. Everyone has a different style it seems.
there is a standard. http://www.safepiercing.org/ just not many people follow it. using a larger needle than the jewelry is NOT standard. really, people just do this because they cant handle a transfer. if you make an incision that is to big, the jewelry will not be fully supported, and you could possibly have problems with bleeding.
thanks for that link. that really makes sense but like i said i probably just thought it was bigger than it was. I only bled for a minute and very little. I have had absolutely no pain or bleeding since about an hour after so the experience has been overwhelmingly positive.
cool melville what kind of tat's ya got...and any by any of the old school ink slingers? I've known a couple of people who had the same belief in their travels and got ink from all around the world.
as far as needle-jewellery size goes, if the piercer uses a piercing blade/needle, then the gauge should be identical. if the piercer uses a canula style needle, which is quite common in europe i believe, the plastic sleeve on the needle will create a bigger hole than the jewellery.
