    I've heard referances to "teachers" in songs by The Byrds, Jethro Tull, and Yes. I don't think they're talking about a teacher in high school. Does anyone know what that means?

    Maybe, like, people who help people get into drugs?

    of course someone would get a drug reference out of it...... Im sure it could be about anything, like a spiritual mentor or something....... its not always about drugs.

    It could be about anybody that tries to enforce your opinions on you. I guess with Yes, you're referring to "And You And I";
    "Sad Preacher Nailed Upon The Coloured Door Of Time/Insane Teacher Be There Reminded Of The Rhyme". That clearly has something to do with the faults of the religious right, which is why Rick Wakeman never really liked this song (because he's a devout Christian).

    That's Yes.

    Jethro Tull: Teacher- Well the dawn was coming, heard him ringing on my bell, well my name's a teacher, cause that is what I call myself, well I have a lesson, that I must impart to you, it's an old expression, but I must insist it's true, hey man look around find yourself some fun no sense in sitting back hating everyone...

    The Byrds- The song is called 5D (Fifth Dimension). Quite honestly and frankly, every time I heard the song I was tripping on acid so hard, or too drunk and stoned to remember the lyrics clearly, but it's something like "What my teachers, and (so and so) have said, scientific delirium madness, so I opened my heart to the whole universe and found it was loving..."

    Those are the 3 examples I can think of with the lyric "Teacher" in them. The only one that I believe was a refernace to drugs is the Byrds song, cause its about a good trip, but fortunatley for myself I've quit all mind altering substances except for nicotene.

    n 1: a person whose occupation is teaching [syn: instructor] 2: a personified abstraction that teaches; "books were his teachers"; "experience is a demanding teacher"

    Thanx bro. But i meant within the context of the Byrds's song, and Tull and yes song. You've probably heard those songs, being 55 and all. But I appreciate the dictionary definition. So I'll infer the following.

    Yes's You and I was about mabye what MichaelByrd1967 said. Mabye like the preacher is sad cause he can't find the God that he's looking for, and that religion fuels war. Just a guess.

    Jethro Tull's Teacher- A man comes to his bed in the morning and tells him to get his own kicks and not be hateful. Mabye the man is Jesus, or mabye it's a dream, or mabye he was up all night tripping, and imagined the teacher, and the teacher's message just reflected his subconciouss sentiments and perception of himself (Ian Anderson, ther author and singer of "Teacher").

    And finally 5D by The Byrds. It's definately a trip song, but I don't know what teacher he's talking about. Mabye McGuinn is actually talking about a teacher in school in that song. The guy (Roger McGuinn) was slightly insane.

    wow i'm gonna say they're just straight up references to 'teaching'. The idea being that you have some knowledge, wisdom, rah rah to impart upon the world. I don't think there's any need to involve the 'paid profession'...except with Another Brick...that is clearly directed at teachers. I am.
