Okay I'm not quite sure if this is the right place to post this, if not I'm sorry. I really want to learn more about edible and medicinal plants that are found in the wild, particularly more urban environments. I don't know where to look to find this information. Well I'm sure I could locate it in time but I was just wondering before I start researching if anyone had any literature or websites or anything to recomend?
you could check your library for reference books, but i think the best way to learn about foraging is to learn from someone who has been doing it for a loooooooong time and can absolutely positively identify the plants, point out the dangerous plants, etc...
yeah I plan to check the library soon and was hoping people had some specific good books to reccomend. I'd love to learn from an actual person and I do hope to find someone willing to teach me eventually...but for now I figure I may as well study as much as I can right? It's good stuff to know.
I like this book: A field guide to edible wild plants : Eastern and central North America by Roger Tory Peterson, Lee Peterson It shows edible ones and the poisonous ones that might be confused with them and how to tell them apart. And on top of that it gives some cooking suggestions and a list of other books they recomend.
yeh, there's some really good books out there. Look for something like a field guide to native medicinal plants. Anything by Susun Weed would be a good source of information, mostly about when and how to harvest, which parts of what plants do what the best, sort of info. You want a field guide or herbal encyclopedia with lots of pictures for identification purposes until you learn to recognize the different plants.
thanks! Kione, I went to the library today and saw that book. It was definitely the kind of thing I'm looking for. I'll have to look in book stores for it, also I was hoping to find one that covered like, all of north america. but yeah something just like that. mamaboogie I will keep an eye out for that name, thank you. someone messaged me via aim about this, I wasn't around and I guess I didn't add them. I forget the screen name...but if you see this, message me again please!
yeah...i second the Peterson guide & also Healing Wise by susun weed. another author is Steve 'Wildman' Brill. he has an awesome book on harvesting edibles & medicinals. google his name bc he has his own website....a really interesting guy & his book is big but really light-weight so it's good to take out with you in the fields & forests. also i'm sure there are gardening clubs in your area that are focused on the native plants. i joined the 'wildflower society' here & i am the only person under forty! it's really cool bc most of the people involved have grown up in this area forever & were taught the native plants by their parents/grandparents....look to your elders....that's where the real knowledge is!
