What exactly is glycerin? Is it, for the most part, refined from petro?
I've been using some really great glycerin free soap from "now" made from sapponified base oils and with essential oils of tea tree rosemarry and sage....and it is the most heady stuff i mean you get high taking a shower it smells so good. And my skin feels SOOOOOO much healthier than the sickening sticky plastered feeel of glycerin soap i grew up on. even dr.bronners has vegie glycerin and i'm tellin you, this non-glycerin stuff lasts twice as long as dr.brooners and is twice as small.

glycerin is either animal or plant based, depending (obviously) on which sort is used.

glycerin is more a lubricant than a fat that saturates in like olive or other oils

isn't glycerin added mainly to eliminate oils on the body?
tea tree oil does this amazingly well

no. the main use of glycerin in the us is African hair products.
it is actually a side product of cracking oils. Making bioDiesel creates glycerin, for example.

    that explains a lot!!!
okay so thats why dr. bronners has it in it, becuase it is made from sapponofied oils and it says then "with retained glycerin" so ooooooooooooooo kay i thought it was a petroleum byproduct like so many other body products in this fowl age of our lord...
and also explains why you can make it out of turtles! i heard that as a kid and and thought it was tripppy

woah glycerin is used in sweets? so do they still kill the seals and what nots to get the glycerin this day, or is it mainly from plants?
oh and i guess i should have been more specific hahaha
hunter s. thompson had a thing for large quantities of noxema soap, i guess so he could blow things up, and i thought noxema was the only soap made with glycerin because it was clear, i dunno, haha

    Cold Process Goats Milk Soap

Makes 4 lbs. Weigh all ingredients,
    following basic cold process method.

    8 oz. distilled water (cold)
    8 oz. goat milk (cold)
    6.5 oz. lye (sodium hydroxide)[IMG]

    8 oz. palm oil
    17 oz. coconut 76 oil
    17 oz. olive oil
    1 oz grapefruit seed extract
    2-3 ozs. essential oil

Mix the distilled water and goat milk together in a container. Add the lye to the water/goat milk mixture and watch as it turns a tan color. Stir in all the lye. Let sit about 10 minutes. Don't be concerned about the temperature of the lye mixture or oils mixture. Prepare your oils, add lye/water/goat milk mixture to the oils. The lye/water/goat milk mixture will look curdled, stir and add it to the pot of oils. Using a stick blender mix well and continue through to trace. Add grapefruit seed extract as a preservative and any scent you like. We've chosen Ginger Essential Oil for a wonderful "Zen" scent. Pour into your mold, cover and let set 20-24 hrs. Cure cut soap for 4 weeks.

Goats milk soap has a creamy smooth texture and is very nourishing for your skin.
