when do you use spelled and spelt? When is one grammatically correct and the other isn't? I always get it confused in my head which to use
ive been known to type like i talk. hat an i hen peck.. spent the last 10 years on this god fersken contraptiojn tryin to tell the world spellin dont count!! nor does grammer. tgis whats in yer soul.. tis what ya feel to type that be right.. luv n lite.
Hmm, I'm not sure. I've never used the -t form. Always used the -ed form....but hmm.. PM Sax_Machine. He knows this stuff. His mum is a copy-editor, and his dad is a teacher. He'll drill it in for ya.
eh, if I were really worried, I'd ask my boyfriend... he's an english/philosophy major, so he knows about correct grammar (apparently I'm atrocious about grammar, but eh, speaking's only so important)
spelled as in "does it have to be spelled out to you?" spelt as in "i spelt it the wrong way" "spelt" is a past participle...i think thats what theyre called. Whereas spelled usually follows the infinitive. I think, anyway Xx
i believe spelt is for british english and spelled is for yank english. i dont think we use spelt here....not sure if you use both.
if more grammers ruled instead of bully boys, the world might be almost as annoying but at least a little safer. =^^= .../\...
i wasnt sure spelled could be classed as a pp, because "i have spelled" sounds completely wrong, whereas "i have spelt" fits. Maybe its because im a brit. But "i have spelled" really sounds a bit stupid to me. Xx
Yeah, thats what i said. Im not sure you understand. The pp follows an auxiliary verb, im pretty sure. As in "i have done", "i have seen" etc...the "have" is the auxiliary, and the "done" and "seen" are past participles...but "spelled" cannot be used with an auxiliary without sounding strange, and so i wouldnt class it as a pp.
"Americans form past participles with the -ed suffix, while the British sometimes use -t, for example: burned vs. burnt, spelled vs. spelt, spoiled vs. spoilt." nah, technically it is. "I have spelled" may sound strange... but technically it is correct. Not all verbs make sense and some of their conjugations are rarely, if ever used in common usage.
Sounds really odd to me but i dont know much about the rules of American English. I should read up on it. Eek, English Language Alevel exam in may Xx
spell1 ( P ) Pronunciation Key (spl) v. spelled, or spelt (splt) spellĀ·ing, spells v. tr. To name or write in order the letters constituting (a word or part of a word). To constitute the letters of (a word): These letters spell animal. To add up to; signify: Their unwise investment could spell financial ruin. v. intr. To form words by means of letters. i take this to mean that you can choose on your own when to use spelled or spelt depending on what voice you're taking in your writings, though i would recommend picking a spelling and sticking to it.
