there are so many sauces out there. A-1 is good on veggies, surprisingly. Try salad dressings, too. Annie's Goddess dressing is awesome and a little goes a long way.

Try dressing them with a little sesame oil.

I like ANYTHING better with salsa... is that a sauce for you? I find even a green salad is better that way :)

Tahini and salsa were both mentioned here. Try this (use small portions if you are scared, but this stuff is delicious...)

Mix tahini in with your favourite salsa, until it is a nice cheesy colour, or to taste. Try it! It's kind of like nachos.

gah. I make something like that. I'm HOOKED on it. I put it on everything.

But, when I do it.. Peanut butter, cayenne, garlic, a little soy sauce(or tamari!), and some water. :D

Not the kind of sauce you're looking for, but I like:

    24 oz of tomato paste
4 tbsp each of oregano and garlic.
1 tbsp each of salt and pepper.
    3 tbsp bay leaves

I add lean ground beef to mine, but obviosly you wouldn't want that in there! :)

Creamy Mustard: 1/2 cup soy mayonnaise. 3 tablespoons Dijon mustard. 3 tablespoons yellow mustard. 1 teaspoon Tabasco. Combine all ingredients in a food processor or blender until smooth and well blended.

    A-1 contents:
    INGREDIENTS:
TOMATO PUREE (WATER, TOMATO PASTE), DISTILLED VINEGAR, CORN SYRUP, SALT, RAISIN PASTE, SPICES AND HERBS, CRUSHED ORANGE PEEL, DRIED GARLIC AND ONION, CARAMEL COLOR, POTASSIUM SORBATE (TO PRESERVE FRESHNESS), XANTHAN GUM.

I see no animals in this, and Picapeppa is indeed awesome, but not to sub for this.
I do prefer tamarind to raisin paste.
A-1 looks like another Make Indian in Rainy Olde sort of thing.
Edited to add: seems SOME A-1 labels for "natural flavors" and some does not.
Kraft will not say if the product is suitable for vegetarians or vegans, so... that's off my personal list (like I've had it in the past year)

On the picapappa line of thought,
I add it and pomegranate reduction to my own ketchup (re-insert the Rainy Olde comment here) with smoke sauce and make a reasonable island barbecue sauce.

Here is my latest for chickpeas:
home made or bought vinegarette, roasted red peppers and smashed garlic whirled in a blender diced fine onions stirred in toss with chickpeas.
For black beans add lime juice.

Interesting. They must have changed the recipe, because when I became a vegetarian, I veered away from A-1 after noticing the anchovies.

Oreos used to have beef fat, but have since changed their evils ways too. I had to exist on Hydrox cookies for years as a sub. :)

I love to use fermented fish sauce on cruciferous vegetables.
    (Broccoli, Cauliflower, Brussels sprout).
I use it instead of butter and salt.(fish sauce does have a good bit of salt already).
Ask your favorite Thai foods market to recommend a good brand.
My favorite is "Three crabs brand"

    I'm not a vegetarian, but don't some eat fish?:cheers2:
