Very nice song...great lyrics and soft-rock composition. It reminds me of a couple of Krishna Das's pieces where he mixes trad bhajan elements with well-known Christian lyrics.

    "Indipop"...produced in India?

OMG!!! I seriously just downloaded this song last night ...it had a different name and artist but it was the exact same song! :) That is soooo ironic.

The song I downloaded last night was "Krishna"- Colonial Cousins....but I'm listening to the two back to back...and they are the same

I love Krishna ni begane, a Kannada composition more than 300 years old, and a staple in Carnatic classical music. You will excuse if I didn't care for the colonial cousins' version, which lacked all the depth and beauty of the raga (Yamunakalyani) and expression of the bhava in the words. Then again, I am prejudiced against Indipop, which is musically equal to the sound of a buffalo pulling it's foot out of a muddy field.

That being said, the colonial cousins are less intolerable than most of their peers.

For a rendition of the song that I find truly appealing, go to http://www.musicindiaonline.com/l/1/m/artist.75/
and click on the song Krishna Nee Begane.

I like them both. :) I don't really think I could compare them...because aside from the general theme the two songs are completely different...but I do like them both...I suppose I could probably like the second a bit more if I knew the words without looking them up...you know? But both beautiful nonetheless....they're about Krishna...how could they not be? ;) hehehe

I grew up listening to my grandmom sing that song... I guess the true blue traditional version is so meaningful and moving to me that the pop equivalent is... well just plastic.

Kind of like hearing the Beatles reinvented for TV commercials.

Seriously...the Beatles, especially George, communicated spirituality to many in the "60's generation" in a way that mainstream American religion had no way of doing...and I think they're still doing it with people your age who are receptive.

I agree - at least the Beatles later stuff - after about 65. And also, other musicians had a kind of deep influence - deeper I think than the influence music has to-day in the multi-media world.

Bob Dylan is another old timer, and among my favourite artists, who has had a definite spiritual influence (how many folk/rock singers get to play for the Pope?:) )- and there are many others -

Right...the Beatles were just the four moptops with an extraordinary sound until then. Their sound and style changed very big around '65 but I didn't pick up on them as a spiritual influence until around '67 on into the post-breakup period.

I love Dylan too, but never thought of him as a spiritual influence, at least on a conscious level. I think I missed his Christian phase altogether...where did that end up?

If it weren't for the beatles, I would not be here either. They had a huge influence on me, at first Lennon, who inspired me to idealism and activism, then George who helped me mellow out into who I am now. But I haven't listened to any of them in a long, long time. Not since my hippie days.

I think Bob phased out of it - or at least toned it down a bit. But I meant really that his music was amongst the first in the 'pop' field (although he was a folkie) to have a serious message. 'Conscience'. And there are spiritual references in a lot of his songs.

Of his 'Christian' albums, the only one I really like is 'Shot of Love'.
I also quite like 'The Travelling Willburys' with him and George Harrison (with others)on the same album.

Another artist who has done a lot of spiritually oriented music which I like very much is Van Morrison. Listen out for references to Krishna for example on 'Beautiful Vision'.

On a different note - another artist I've discovered during the last few years is DJ Cheb I Sabbah - he has worked extensively in India with Indian musicians, and his albums are a kind of mix of traditional and electronic. Quite successful in my view. 'Krishna Lila' 'Maha Maya' and 'Sri Durga' are all very good - if that is, you like that sort of thing.
