Thank God (or whoever) that I never got a chest like Dolly Parton. Bras are

uncomfortable and frustrating to wear so I don't wear them.

The woman burning is Illegal in India!!!

In the past it used to happen but there was a famous Indian philosopher who was also a small prince when India was under the british government. His name was Rajah(prince) Ram mohan Roy, he forced the british government to take action against this and at that time , in 1800 something , it was considered illegal.

I get seriously offended when some one makes a rude comment about India, people in the west live in their own ignorance while they are made to learn all sorts of ethnocentric views, which are taught as facts.
Even though it is true that women still face problems like "dowry", today, majority of the middle class women in India are not exactly subjugated either. Most of them are in IT - just like the men.

Yes, I know it's illegal, but that doesn't mean it has stopped. And it's not just India, it is also in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and many other places I'm sure. I wasn't saying anything bad about Indian women--chill out. And I wasn't implying the west is completely free of sexism--we have our own forms of it. My point was that sexism (of a worse kind than being expected to wear a bra) exists in the world today, whether it's FGM (female genital mutilation), dowries, unfair educational oppurtunities (60% of all children not enrolled in school are girls), unequal wages, etc. etc. etc. I wasn't picking on India, I was merely using that as one example.

BTW: The majority of middle class women DOES NOT mean the majority of all women in India, as most people there are of the lower classes.

I know what I am talking about , I lived in India for a few years. The women over there are not "subjugated" like they show it in the media here. The middle class women in India- are in IT business- I mentioned this because middle class people in India are very intelligent, so it implies that women are also in many intellectual fields.

I agree that there are many relatively poor people in India, but in them too, women are working as maid servants, shop workers, laborers in factories and they are also moving up to higher classes .

The India that we read about in America is that of 1960s, 70s and 80s. India at present is in a lot better shape.

And no there is absolutely no wife burning in India, I don't know where you got this from but I heard of/saw/read no such instances were wives were burnt.

I have heard and read about some instances where wives were killed by their husbands because they didn't give them enough dowry and I have heard husbands dying because the wife wanted to have his wealth all for herself, but no body today in India and no body in modern India has been burnt because her spouse has died.

    With that said,

I do not know how women's situation is in Srilanka, but I do know that the country is plagued by terrorism , therefore it might have some effects on women of that country.

lol, not to be flippant, but i think it's kinda funny how a thread started about an optional piece of underwear has become a discussion of human rights.

It did because I got offended by some of the statements made here... anyway, please continue, the issue of how "bras are very intricate" and how "removing one from a girl's back can equal to hell" is fascinating indeed. ;)

Ofcourse, women are the universe's greatest mystery, so please by all means continue... I apologize for going on a side track. :D

All I can say is, I don't know what I would do without my bra..

Some may think they're a pain, but for people with larger boobs a decent bra is crucial!

Just recently I began wearing a bra again after putting up a protest all of High School. The only time I wore a bra was when I danced cuz it was a requirement. I'm going into my senior yr. with a bra. I'm sure my classmates will be impressed. The truth is I was started to lose my perkiness & I panicked & gave in. I know the perkiness leaves with age, but putting on a bra pretty much everyday is my attempt to slow down the process. But hey if you can go w/o a bra more power to ya!

Some women can very easily go without a bra, and others cannot. Personally I have no objection in either way. I do know a few that I don't see the need for it. Personally I am a naturist and live nearly all the time without clothes.

Some folks don't agree with this, but it is a personal decision and not to be taken lightly.

Its actully Healthier not to wear a bra during exercising because it helps the mussles get exercise too..thus making them healthier and perkier

Tell that to someone who is almost a DD. If I don't wear a bra during exercise, I can almost give myself a black eye...

"The first modern brassiere to receive a patent was one invented by a New York socialite named Mary Phelps Jacob in 1913. Mary had just purchased a sheer evening gown for one of her social events. At that time, the only acceptable undergarment was a corset stiffened with whaleback bones. Mary found that the whalebones poked out visible around the plunging neckline and under the sheer fabric. Two silk handkerchiefs and some pink ribbon later, Mary had designed an alternative to the corset. The corset's reign was starting to topple."

I would much rather wear a bra than a corset....

    The whole story

i'm a 34D - don't wear bras except when i have to (which i get the feeling is going to be a lot more now since i'm going to law school next year) - and i don't dig the "well you don't have big boobs so you just don't understand! i CAN'T not wear a bra!"

good for you if you want to wear one, everyone has their own sentiments, but it's a lie to say you can't go without one. :)

speaking from experience with the D's i've had since i was 12 (on a very small frame mind you, i weigh 105 pounds), it is very possible and comfortable to not wear a bra if you just take about 5 days to get used to how if feels. the first time i realized this was when i was really sick once when i was 14, and didn't get dressed for a week. low and behold - hey.. wait.. this doesn't hurt it feels awesome!

it's funny, i went for some law school stuff this last weekend and wore one for four days in a row, and when i finally got to NOT wear one again, i could tell how much weaker the ligaments around my boobs were, and how it felt like "whoa my boobs are everywhere." it's been two days now bra-free again and it's just starting to feel normal again.

oh and i have definitely not lost perkiness or firmness or anything. they look pretty much exactly the same as they did seven years ago.
silly boobs :) ah but i love them.
